Is Obama American Enough to Succeed?

Is Barack Obama enough of an American? Can a person be well-educated, dark-skinned and a real American at the same time?
Obama’s election hinges on whether a majority thinks the latter is possible or is so self-evident that the question is silly. The McCain-Palin ticket’s central strategy still is to stoke doubt and keep the first question alive.

It cannot be denied that this election would get much less attention were it a contest between a young white liberal-centrist and an old white right-wing warrior. The emotional outpouring is there because Obama is non-white in a white nation.

Europeans and other non-Americans are so riveted by this electoral drama because for almost everyone America is a white and multi-denominational Christian nation. In those eyes being black, Hispanic, Asian or Muslim denotes belonging to an immigrant minority tolerated by white Americans but not of them.

For those eyes, it is exciting and surprising to see white people elect an apparently black person to be their Commander-in-Chief and ruler.

Yet, Obama is not really black or an African American despite his skin color. African Americans are just slightly newer than the early white settlers while Obama is the son of a foreign father who did not become American. His claim to being American comes from his white mother and grandparents.

For most eyes, America is white nation because immigrants of other races got there later. Europeans find it hard to see American blacks as being as genuinely American as whites. In Europe, all “colored” people are forever immigrants. France’s Nicholas Sarkozy born of immigrant Hungarians could never have become President were he black or Arab regardless of how many generations of ancestors were French born.

Obama is fighting an honorable battle against difficult odds. He is trying to establish the universal perception that he is American first and all else is second. To do that, he repeatedly tries to reassure voters by pointing to his white grandparents.

In effect, he is telling white voters that despite his skin color and unusual name he is just like them by culture and beliefs. If life were fair, he should not have to do so. His character and human qualities should be enough. Yet his skin color puts him at risk however American his emotions, behavior and values.

Perhaps his character and humanity will triumph. Many white Americans will join others to bring him to the Oval Office.

What then? Would the other white people immediately start to undermine him to prove to all that “We gave the black person a chance but he did not measure up”?

If despite that Obama starts to be a successful President will someone assassinate him just to stop a black person from being a role model for all Americans?

Yet he is not genuinely black because his pigmentation is a quirk of genes. Were his maternal genes stronger, he would have looked white.

Whatever the future holds, Obama would not be a top tier international news story were he white. Perhaps, like Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, everyone will forget his skin color when he starts work as President.

But both of them are genuine African Americans raised from slaves. Obama does not have the history. Can he get the respect?

That would be a real triumph for him and for all Americans. The torrent for him is emotional. Perhaps he will be blessed enough to measure up to those emotions.

Respectfully, I don't believe the majority of Americans look at Obama from this perspective (that he is not really "black" because his origins do not trace back to slave roots). Personally, until I read your commentary, I had never thought of Obama's "blackness" from this angle at all. I imagine that many African-Americans might feel this difference, but clearly it isn't a difference that matters to them in the polls (and will not likely affect them in the booth).

Clearly race is a factor in this race and denying that is simple naivete. But I suspect most folks in the middle are weighing experience (or lack of it) and youth against the demands of the highest office in some of the most trying times of our generation. Obama has provide a reassuring persona in that regard, but the nervousness will likely still be there for many voters right up to election day. I doubt that Obama's maternal lineage will ultimately be the tipping point for these voters - they've processed the race piece of the puzzle already and are frankly more worried about their homes and their jobs.

This whole article smacks of someone who starts with uninformed assumptions about America based on perceptions gleaned from media or reports from overseas.

The author is obviously not very familiar with the United States. I reject the idea that America is a "white nation". I reject the notion that African-Americans are "slightly newer" than white settlers. By that logic, Native Americans are more important than any other citizen.

The author doesn't know Colin Powell's background, either. He is not descended from American plantation slaves. His family is from the Caribbean.

Obama doesn't claim to be American because of his white mother and grandparents. That's ridiculous. Obama is an American because he was born on American soil. Period.

If Obama is a target for assassination, it won't be only because of his skin color, but because he's a threat to the system of entrenched privilege.

I appreciate the effort that foreigners are putting in trying to understand what is going on in this election, but it seems that this author has never even set foot in the U.S.

I have no problem with Obama being half black. I have a problem with is muslim background and the help he has had from muslim people.

Martin Luther King said, "Don't judge someone by the color of their skin, judge them by the content of their character".

We hear alot about the candidates, but who is telling the truth? I believe what I see and I will show you an eye opener! This election is so important so please take time to watch the video.

First off, Obama is not the Anti-Christ! But, go to you tube and type in "Obama anti-christ - the acorn prophecy" and watch, seeing is believing. Please take the time, this election is so important and we all should know the truth!

The truth about obama, all this I say is on internet:
He knew Bill Ayers well, he lied.
He would not wear the flag pin showing support after 911
he was Barry all his life until visiting muslim countries and became Barack, what brought out his muslim background wanting to be Barack?
He stated the big tragedy of the civil rights movement was that there was no redistribution of wealth to minorities.
Took the American flag off of his plane and won't put hand over heart for pledge of allegiance.
He is very close to Reverend Wright for many years and knew of the reverend's anti American and racists rants and lied about knowing what he has said. As long as he was with Wright, it is obvious he had no problems with Wright's views.
There is so much more to see America if you investigate.

I never thought anything would make me lower myself to get into the racial arena with anyone, but to even ask the question if Sen Obama is American enough is, in my opinion, an insult to every person of color who was born here.
A white nation?? Give me a break. This nation was stolen from Native Americans. To say that Obama isn't a true African American is ludicrous. He is EXACTLY that...1/2 African and 1/2 American. He is an AMERICAN..he was born American. His mother is American. Did he ever claim to have dual citizenship? I don't think so.
Your article just reinforces my belief that people are completely ignoring the facts of this election and focusing on his skin color.
Maybe this "white nation" you refer to is intimdated by a BLACK person who has lived his life right, done well and achieved what countless white men of the past have done. If Obama were not of color, would this even be an issue? I think not.

Obama and those from his camp are the ones that play the race card.
The media will find out just how angry they have perpetrated this fraud on the American people - with all their totally biased, in the tank coverage of Obama on this Obama campaign.

Completely "dismissing" the multitude of bad associations and poor judgments that Obama has show.
His inexperience, weakness and inability to make a decision.
Now we find out about his aunt living in a Boston slum, 3 court cases involving his birth certificate - and the Old stories: Rev GD AmerKKKa Wright, Bill Ayres, Louis Farrakhan, Father Fleuger, Tony Rezko, illegal capmpaign contributions, ACORN silencing the press and investigating private citizens by hacking into state computers. There is NO END to the clouds that
    hang above this man's head.
And yet, the media persists in anointed "The Missiah."
I hope the print media loses all their paid subscriptions and the networks lose their ad base as well.
    Shame on all of you!

Keep repeating this pattern until your wreath base is covered, cover the stems of the last bundle with the first american flag wallpaper bundle and there you are.
