This article and especially the comment above seem to imply that Palin made a speech at the University Park campus of Penn State. In fact, Palin was not speaking in State College in the middle of rural Pennsylvania; she was speaking at Penn State Behrend College in Erie, in the extreme northwest corner of Pennsylvania, some 200 miles away. And the visit to Behrend was really just a side show; she spoke at Behrend because she was speaking in Erie later in the day; she was not in Erie because she was speaking at Behrend.

I don't believe Spanier attended Obama's rally here at Behrend during the primary season. (I don't know this for a fact - my memory isn't that good, but I haven't seen any mention of his having been there). Obama's Penn State Behrend address was not just a side show; it was the reason he came to Erie - I didn't hear any fuss at that time about Spanier not being included in the event. If Spanier really was anxious to meet Palin, I'm sorry he didn't get his opportunity. But quite frankly this all sounds pretty silly to me. It sounds like more of the same half information provided with hidden agendas.

I teach at a university much like Penn State, and I am appalled at the incivility, rudeness, and generally clueless behavior that the McCain/Palin campaign engaged in today. You don't snub the university president. You just don't. What were they thinking? Spanier granted them permission to use university property, invited them into his community, and they don't have the sense to recognize that he is their host? Good lord. I can't make sense of this at all.
