Syria Attack Shows Meaning of U.S.-Iraq Security Deal: Al Gomhuria, Egypt
America’s attack on Syria – using Iraqi territory as a launching pad – has set off alarm bells across the Middle East. Many Arabs are convinced – including the editorial board of the Egyptian newspaper Al Gomhuria – that the Status of Forces Agreement now being negotiated between the U.S. and Iraq – will permit many more such attacks by the United States on Iraq’s neighbors – using sovereign Iraqi territory as a launching pad.
“But the United States of America didn’t wait for the agreement to be signed. Instead, it launched a naked aggression on the Abu Kamal area of Syria,
despite Damascus’ help in destroying the terrorist network bringing fighters into Iraq. … The Abu Kamal raid shows how little regard the United States has for international law, which protects the sovereignty of states. Furthermore, it demonstrates that Washington fails to heed the consequences of using Iraqi land to undertake aggressions against another Arab country. The U.S. is taking the opportunity to show the Iraqis that they remain in the American pocket!”

Through their religious groups and parties, the Iraqi people have forced their government, which came to power under the U.S. occupation, to request amendments to the so-called Security Agreement with the United States. The majority of Iraqis felt the deal diminished Iraqi sovereignty, legitimized an open-ended U.S. occupation and posed an open threat to the security and stability of Iraq’s neighboring countries by permitting the unrestrained presence of American bases. This would mean it could launch aggressions against Iraq’s neighbors whenever it wanted to – even if they are Arab [as opposed to Persian/Iranian].
But the United States of America didn’t wait for the agreement to be signed. Instead, it launched a naked aggression on the Abu Kamal area of Syria, despite Damascus’ help in destroying the terrorist network bringing fighters into Iraq.

Why did Bush attack Syria? Because altho he managed to stretch the US military in two endless wars,jettisoned our economic prosperity, and ruined our international reputation, he did not want to leave office without starting WWIII.
BBCNews.com, hardly a pro-Bush site, is reporting the rationale for this one-time raid five miles into Syrian territory:
“The US military sent troops 8km (five miles) into Syria, to the village of Sukkiraya, to take action which they hope will help shut down al-Qaeda's secret pipeline into Iraq for men, weapons and money.
The mission was to capture or kill, Abu Ghadiya, an Iraqi-born al-Qaeda cell leader the US says has helped to bring thousands of jihadist fighters across the border.”
Sen. Obama has repeatedly said he would authorize cross-border raids into Pakistan, if it meant smoking out terrorists. Is there a difference between that and what President Bush has done?
