Thoughts on the Obama Infomercial

First a reminder. I’m biased. I’ve been a supporter of Barack Obama since he ran for Senate in 2004. I am truly “in the tank” for Obama and have been all along. So this won’t be an “objective” reaction to the infomercial. It will be the reaction of a supporter who is optimistic about next Tuesday but knows very well that this race is not over yet. So here goes.

First, was it worth it? I hate infomercials as, I imagine, many people do. They are usually boring, repetitive and even somewhat embarrassing to watch. That said, politicians have used infomercials to positive effect before. Reagan in 1980 ran lengthy ads (not really infomercials) that reassured voters he was reasonable. Ross Perot made them famous. He built his entire campaign on town halls and infomercials where he laid out his agenda on his own terms. So this isn’t the first time this has happened.

So, if you have the money, why not? You can reach a HUGE audience without rebuttal.

For Obama there was another advantage to this: every time he appears on TV for a length of time his numbers go up. Sometimes just temporarily, Obama has always seen a bump after a major speech or event.

As with every other major event there is a risk of overreaching. McCain has attacked Obama on that ground before. After Berlin he mocked the foreign reception and called him a celebrity. After the DNC Republicans mocked the pillars (though not with a whole lot of effect, to be honest; the RNC’s overall program helped McCain at the time). So the risk is here too.

Let me get out the two things that McCain might hit back on. First, the quasi-Oval Office motif in the opening scene. Was this presumptuous? I’m not sure that it is at this juncture. A new President will be sworn in in just a few months. It’s not a terrible idea to be seen in a Presidential setting. An Oval Office-looking scene is not quite Greco-Roman columns or the Siegerssaule. So I don’t think it will blow back too much.

The second issue was tone. This was a somewhat somber presentation. In fact, it was a tear-jerker at times with some of the featured “average Americans” experiencing some heart wrenching challenges. Is that the tone you want to strike right now? Do you want to depress the audience?

I imagine some people might have seen those moments as a downer.

But I think a lot more will see them as real. In fact, the power of this infomercial was not Obama speaking to the camera but the vignettes of ordinary people from around the country. This was no Perot town hall.

In fact, I think the infomercial was flawlessly produced, including the segue to the live shot in Florida. This reminded me of the pitch-perfect Bush acceptance speech at the 2004 RNC – stellar choreography that captured the moment. As Nate Silver points out on his blog, this whole thing felt like the DNC compressed into 30 minutes; and the DNC was VERY good.

But the real question is how this plays with soft Obama supporters. This was not meant for hard McCain supporters. Nor was it geared toward people like me. It might not have been designed for truly undecided voters either. The audience was soft Obama supporters that McCain needs to peel off in order to win. And as McCain’s own pollster Bill McInturff pointed out, those voters are rural, white, and economically struggling. Not coincidentally, this infomercial was aimed right at those people. Obama looked reassuring, not risky. He looked like he had pragmatic solutions, and did not appear to be some Marxist radical. He showed empathy for what Hillary Clinton infamously called “hard working Americans, white Americans.” I suspect that that will make the difference in the end.

Was it worth it? Am I happy with it? Let me say this much. I watched it with my whole family. My kids were actually riveted by it, with my son asking how Obama’s mother died and what cancer is. I never felt embarrassed watching it as I feared I would. Nor did I sense any Messianism from Obama; the Oval Office backdrop was the most “presumptuous” moment of the whole thing.

So, yeah, I think it worked. I’m not the target audience so we’ll have to see what others say. But I think the whole thing solidified some of those wavering downscale voters. And that’s what Obama had to do.

133,333.00 a mintue to tell me what....he is lowering the takes on 90% of the population, cutting cost on medical services, and making education affordable to ALL. Sounds good huh....who is going to pay for this ... i was waiting for ross perot to jump out with a chart to explain it... i didn't buy it did you . and if you did we wll will end up paying for it. The fake white house setting was a JOKE...SNL could have done better.
Sorry obama...spen more than 2 years in the senate before you run again, you lost my support
I will now vote for McCain

I don't think the infomercial was necessary, but I guess they aren't leaving anything to chance. At least it was well produced, and as you say, not embarrassing. It meant little to me, Obama is so obviously the clear choice anyway, but it may help some who were leaning but still a little confused. I'll bet it was a good night for Pushing Daisies. ;-)

    David,
You honestly believe McCain will balance the budget?

Deficit spending is a hallmark of American government and has been especially since Reagan. Who's going to pay for it? China! They've paid for the war in Iraq. They've paid for everything. It's more honest than saying that cutting taxes will grow the economy and reduce the deficit.

I am glad you felt it was a reasonable use of your time to your inform the readers that you are no better than your apparent candidate, McCain. You must be an economist of some sort to feel like YOU can criticize and essentially label Obama as a liar with your "who is going to pay for this" comment. Do you know how he is going to pay for it??? He will stop spending YOUR money in the most financially draining war of all time! I think 12 months of the IRAQ war budget saved will go a very long way to putting a lot more fiscal sercurity in the United States. Your comment "I will now vote for McCain" seems extremely short sighted and a bit careless as, if you are basing your vote on a 30 minute infomercial you should be stripped of your abilty to vote because rash and myopic people like you are what caused the last 8 years of indisputable idiocy in Washington.

Elrod is right-- This ends up putting the Chinese in a powerful position when it comes to trade agreements and other issues and us in a weak one. Think of the deluge of defective and dangerous Chinese products we've been importing and consuming, while our own industries have been put on a death watch. Also we've seen the dollar's currency value seriously deteriorate.

China has been our ally in some areas like our dealings with N. Korea, our nemesis in others like imposition of sanctions on Iran, but since they own a big chunk of our debt, there is little we can do except appeal to their better natures as a world leader. They are the world's biggest polluter and their labor standards are close to virtual slavery. They commit odious acts like selling their executed countrmen's skin and organs to the rich. Worst of all they are using the ever-climbing interest from the debt to rebuild and rearm their military.

Since we can only look at one problem at a time (the GWOT) we are willfully ignoring all of this.

    Dear Sullivanb,
so if i watched the dog and pony show last night and that made me decide to vote for Obamma then "if you are basing your vote on a 30 minute infomercial you should be stripped of your abilty to vote" WOW so then in your eyes it was Wrong for Obamma to spend over 100,000 a mintue. Obamma was wrong to buy ,with donations from the middle class, air time on seven different stations was a mistake. And where did I call Obama a "Liar"? If we can not ask REAL questions, then the man can not be trusted.
    Vote McCain

The thing to keep in mind about the foreign nation financing of US profligate spending is that it does not increase their power per se. As the lenders, they're the ones bearing the risk if we default. The risk to the US is that they will stop (or dramatically slow down) financing us at some point when there's a more productive place for them to put their money. (The other risk is that we are dangerously exposed to dependence on foreign sources of energy.) One way to ensure that we remain an attractive place to invest is to get through this current crisis as quickly as or quicker than other global markets while maintaining as much of a technological advantage as we can hang on to. How do we do that? Maybe infuse a lot of capital into the private sector and invest in infrastructure and funding new technology ... by borrowing more of their money . . . This is not a time to be overly concerned by deficits.

At least one presidential candidate understands these things.

    aba

What if they decide they want to collect? How can we default on a debt without becoming an international laughing stock? Worse, who will buy it next time? Deficits DO matter. Also I remember a time when Made in America was a symbol of our national pride--we were not just a nation of Walmart shoppers, looking for the cheapest imports.

I thought the Informercial was so personal and hands on. Senator Obama is a man of truth and dignity. I felt that every pennie spent on this ad was well worth it. It gave me a sense of completion and knowledge of WHO BARACK OBAMA REALLY IS. I WILL VOTE FOR HIM.
Although my mind was made up a long time ago, last nights 30 mins of this amazing speaker, sealed the deal. Anyone with half a brain can see that Obabma speaks from his heart. I cried through out the entire Infomercial. It really hit home, due to the fact that it proved that not just one race of people has and still are suffering through the republican leadership.
The horror that the Bush Administation has caused our country, will never be forgotten.
I have one question for McCain... My husband and I are hard working people. 3 years ago, we were giving a ''bad mortgage''. We took such pride in moving onto our home. Just last month we had to move our 2 children out of their home, due to forclosure. My question is, due to the fact that you and your wife are rich and dont want to share the wealth, would it be possible to give my family one of your 7 homes. You could write it off in your taxes. Iam sure that you both gross much more then $200.000 . Thats what you Repulicains do for the rich, isnt it.
Finally I would like to add that Senator Obama may have spent a couple of million on the 30 min, ad, However ALL of the money he is using for his advertisments, were donations to him, so why are the republicians worried about it. What do you all suggest he does with the money? Perhaps he should give some to joe the plummer, so that he can ''buy his own plumming business". Well since mccain ( name doesnt deserve a title or capitalization) used joe to promote hie lies, he should spread some of his and his wifes weath and buy it for joe. GO OBAMA,,,,,,,,,,OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT. SEE YA ALL TUESDAY NOV,4.2008

    Dear jrw41ww,
and that is what is wrong with america. I am sorry the Bank dragged you into their building and "gave you a bad mortgatge". I can't believe you did not call the police. OR is it that you did not tell the truth (like obama) when applying for the mortgage? it has been a Democratically controlled house and senate and what have they done...Declaired war on iraq (FAQ. President can not delcare war look it up) ...they have increased our taxes and you sit there and blame bush..really??
You cried because you are being lead around by your nose. FACT banks dont give bad mortgages...did you read the paper before you signed it .NO ... and i guess that is President Bush's fault we well..
GROW UP...and admit when you made a mistake..before you elect a freshman senator with no experience..

    VOTE McCain...He tells the truth
