Rush at one time was considered on the far right fringes. That he has become more mainstream has damaged the conservative movement and driven moderates out of the party. Obama is reaping the rewards of his over-the-top style and content. If anything is to be learned from '08, it is that wild negative propaganda and whisper campaigns cannot by themselves win elections. They can not be substituted for lack of a coherent message.

McCain's lame attempt to bring in the GOP base by picking the woefully unqualified Ms. Palin , and assigning her the role of attack dog with "nothing to lose", has resulted in the loss of the moderates and Independents that he needed to hang onto to win.

He is losing because he listened to the far right voices--- whose approach no longer works for mainstream America. Why does anyone who is losing their home, job or pension want to hear about Ayres or Rezco? Rush and Sean are still trying to tie Obama to Farrakhan, Jackson and Wright, but no ones listening that wouldn't have voted R in the first place.

Partially true, partially off. Rush gets paid millions because he is an entertainer who has been able to attract an audience. Folks have mistaken entertainment for true voice and leadership.

The Republicans need to burn this to the ground and start over. Core conservative principles of small government, fostering independence and entrepeneurship, et c. still resonate, but are brought into serious question by their actions when handed power. I think Pawlenty and his focus on Sam's Club Republicans is a good start.

I think the Republicans need to try to reframe their economic message in more populist terms, but they need to evolve past this culture war bullshit because it leaves total disdain in the mouth of fiscal conservative, socially moderate/liberal voters like me who are winnable votes for the party.

So neither will his influence.
