He Isn’t Called A Big, Fat, Idiot for Nothing

Ah, Rush:

“How come the conservative movement is fracturing,?” when there’s a blueprint for winning it, 1980, there’s a blueprint. McCain is not the blueprint for how Republicans win landslides. Going after moderates, independents, and all these yokels is not the blueprint. The blueprint’s there, 1994, taking back the House, the blueprint’s there. Why are these people ignoring it?

Did this jerk forget the “Reagan Democrats?”

Alex Massie notes that going with the “true believers” ain’t enough:

Of course, as Daniel Larison points out, the GOP won in 1994 in large part because it was able to appeal to many more independent voters than it had in 1992. (Clinton’s less than stellar first two years in office obviously also helped). As I have suggested, once a party’s brand has become contaminated – as was the case with the Tories in the mid-1990s and the GOP now – you cannot simply retreat to first principles and assume that the public will forgive and forget your sins. It doesn’t work like that. And, again as the Tories discovered, once the brand has been contaminated the base is no longer enough to win. When the electorate moves, political parties that are truly interested in winning move too.

Reagan won in ‘80 by winning over enough Dems frustrated by their party. Obama seems to be doing the same thing with the steady stream of elephants trekking over to his side. You win by trying to widen the tent, not make it smaller.

Dear GOP Leaders: After we get our backsides handed to us in November, please, please, whatever you do, don’t listen to Rush, unless you want to be remain out of power for about a decade.

Rush Limbaugh gets paid millions of dollars to position himself as the true voice of Republicans specifically because he is able to attract an audience.

His audience isn't just going to dissipate.

    So neither will his influence.

Someone might wanna clue Rush in: the 80's are over, society has changed, the world has changed. Even blueprints have to change at some point before they are outdated and tossed to the trash bin.

Partially true, partially off. Rush gets paid millions because he is an entertainer who has been able to attract an audience. Folks have mistaken entertainment for true voice and leadership.

The Republicans need to burn this to the ground and start over. Core conservative principles of small government, fostering independence and entrepeneurship, et c. still resonate, but are brought into serious question by their actions when handed power. I think Pawlenty and his focus on Sam's Club Republicans is a good start.

I think the Republicans need to try to reframe their economic message in more populist terms, but they need to evolve past this culture war bullshit because it leaves total disdain in the mouth of fiscal conservative, socially moderate/liberal voters like me who are winnable votes for the party.

Rush at one time was considered on the far right fringes. That he has become more mainstream has damaged the conservative movement and driven moderates out of the party. Obama is reaping the rewards of his over-the-top style and content. If anything is to be learned from '08, it is that wild negative propaganda and whisper campaigns cannot by themselves win elections. They can not be substituted for lack of a coherent message.

McCain's lame attempt to bring in the GOP base by picking the woefully unqualified Ms. Palin , and assigning her the role of attack dog with "nothing to lose", has resulted in the loss of the moderates and Independents that he needed to hang onto to win.

He is losing because he listened to the far right voices--- whose approach no longer works for mainstream America. Why does anyone who is losing their home, job or pension want to hear about Ayres or Rezco? Rush and Sean are still trying to tie Obama to Farrakhan, Jackson and Wright, but no ones listening that wouldn't have voted R in the first place.

RL is the perfect symbol of the infection that invaded the republican party. If there is any divine justice, his sentence when he exits this earthly plane will consist of having to listen to his own radio broadcasts ad infinitum.
