It's simple. Here's how it works: You can have whatever religious beliefs you want, and you can say, write, and believe anything that you want. But I can too. I can make fun of your beliefs, and you can make fun of mine. But the minute one of us says “no, you're not allowed to say/believe that”, we've crossed the line.

Blasphemy is absolutely integral to free speech. It goes both ways: you're allowed to make fun of or say whatever you want about Christians/atheists/etc. But you're not allowed to take away anyone's right to do the same about you.

Generally I disagree with almost every premise of this post. But this is ridiculous, and should be pointed out as such. I find it very difficult to be sympathetic to the myth of religious persecution in the United States, or that somehow religious ideals need “protection.”

I certainly advocate “protection” of individuals, but not of religious ideals or dogma. Contrary to positions advocated by the Pope, or of recent presidential candidates–to bring religious ideas into the marketplace, these ideas must be subject to the same criticisms that apply to all ideas. Get over the persecution complex.
