Hilzoy provides the background (h/t Mr. Sullivan) on this particular example of the following routine:
1. Take an assumption (any old assumption will do)
2. Extrapolate the hell out of it
3. Sound the alarms and declare disaster.
I know. I know. This crap happens on the Left as well as the Right, but this is the example that caught my eye today.
The annoying thing is that if someone went through and demonstrated that every last living contribution was domestic, about 15% of the population will still be talking about Obama's foreign donations racket 4 years from now. And, yes, this belief process occurs on both sides.
It occurs on both sides, but it's challenging to find much of ANYTHING coming from McCain supporters (or even the campaign itself) that doesn't fall under this rubrik.
