Disgusted Democrats Not Sold On Obama

Polarization abounds in this topsy-turvy, Alice-in-Wonderland campaign season and I am grateful that it will soon be over!

Obama_McCain_Polarization_1101081553.jpg

I am a U.S. citizen, Democrat, Jew, lesbian-feminist, liberal, pro-choicer and am proud of all of these characteristics. I am, however, disgusted with both Presidential tickets. I prefer John McCain on foreign affairs, the Middle East and national security issues but prefer Barack Obama on social and most domestic issues.

Without declaring the general euphoria around Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign to be unrealistic, I will share a few vignettes and my opinions.

Both candidates and their campaigns have lied and are lying. They are, after all, politicians. We all know that whomever wins will have to raise taxes. Both campaigns have spent an unconscionable amount of money on advertising. Any new voters they are getting are probably too ignorant to be voting.

John McCain, who is one of the best Republican nominees in decades, should not have picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. That move alone has driven away many Democrats and independent voters.

Barack Obama is, in my opinion, the worst Democratic nominee since Jimmy Carter in 1980. I have read all of his first book and part of the his second book. Very interesting.

Why I’m not crazy about Obama (a list I wrote recently for an Obama supporter):

“1) Obama does not have the experience and has no business whatsoever running for President at this time.
2) Obama does not have a sufficiently long voting record for proper evaluation.
3) Obama has clearly exhibited pro-Palestinian behavior.
4) Obama has a lot of nasty friends.
5) Obama does not inspire hope.
6) The more I watch him, listen to him and read his speeches the less I like him.
7) I do not agree with or trust him on the Iraq War let alone the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
Added on to the above, I don’t believe anything he has said in the last 5 years about the State of Israel, Palestinians, the Arab countries and Middle East peace.

Breaking the fast after Yom Kippur with a communal meal at a local deli, X tells me that Y is planning to call me to make sure that I don’t vote for “the evil John McCain” but they don’t want me to vote for Barack Obama either. They want me to write-in Hillary Clinton instead. Other friends tell me that they will not cast a vote in the presidential race, only the down-ticket races…

I’m of the theory that, if I don’t vote for one of the major party candidates, I have no right to complain about the results. It all comes down to which choice will hurt my conscience the least.

Most of my Democratic friends are not enthusiastic about Sen. Obama but will reluctantly vote for him anyway. One of two reasons is usually provided:

1) He’s the Democratic candidate for President and I’m a Democrat.
2) I’m worried about the future composition of the Supreme Court [SCOTUS].

This JTA article is an example of the first reason.

This article by Alan Dershowitz is an example of the second reason.

I find both of the above arguments to be bogus, the first because I vote for the best candidate in each race regardless of party and the second because SCOTUS appointees historically tend to moderate their views and do the very best job that they can to serve the American people and our judicial system.

A couple of days ago I got an emailed video from a friend, “Obama’s Loss Traced To Holly Robinson.” HA!

A friend is married to a U.S. citizen who emigrated from the FSU (former Soviet Union). Reportedly the Russian immigrants are scared silly of Sen. Obama. So, apparently, are some local Roman Catholics. While distributing literature today for my local Democratic congressional candidate, I picked up a brochure featuring a blue Obama with a blood-red hand-print over his face titled, “Is it Immoral to Vote for Obama for President?” This appears to be the Randall Terry handout, it was accompanied by a list of local “pro-life” candidates for whom to vote. Of course, this is just ridiculous.

Obama is, however, winning the Busken Bakery Cookie Poll:

  • You picked the Democratic Party they didn't pick you. If you can't find a way to vote for the Democratic nominee for President then maybe you should find another party.

Please vote McCain, since Israel is more important to you than America's responsibility to be an honest impartial broker to both--Palestine and Israel. You see the rest of us (98% of USA) only have one country to be loyal too. So if you McCain wins and finish the destruction of America that Bush started, at least you have another country to go to. The rest of us (98% of America) will have to fight and save our country and restore its leadership for all the world.

One more note: McCain/Palin's base of supporters (The Christian Reich) claim they support Israel, but they only want Israel to be Jesus's landing strip for the Second Coming. Then it's convert to Christianity or else for the Jews.

    Be Stupid. Vote McCain!
  • One bone to pick: You didn't listen to his speech at AIPAC? "...[T]he bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable today, tomorrow and forever." If that's pro-Palestinian behavior...then this must be Bizarro World, or something.

  • It sounds like the name of this article should have been "Disgusted Religious Democrats Not Sold On Obama"?

Obama inspires hope many people, and even the Republicans do not mince words that he's an eloquent and engaging speaker. He has demonstrated a very clear, thoughtful and saavy mastery of all the issues as well as open-mindedness and measured response to a wide range of issues. Also with regards to Israel and the Middle East, bear in mind the President of the United States is elected to protect OUR Constitution and OUR country first and foremost, and that if we do not have an exit planned for Iraq that our military will be too overextended to do much of anything to help Israel or cover any other Middle East conflicts should more arise. Furthermore our economy is teetering on the brink as well, which means a huge contraction in the amount of foreign endeavors regardless of who is elected.

Both candidates will likely have their hands bound by the recession and have trouble doing much of anything. As a Republican, the reason I am not voting McCain is because he has done a 180 on many major issues since securing the nomination and I no longer have faith in anything he says. Also the prospect of Sarah Palin as Commander-in-Chief scares me s#@!less and seems like the absolute worst decision McCain could have made with the VP pick. His first major decision in this race was a dealbreaker for me.

If McCain truly was as hardcore for Israel as you would like to believe he is, he would have flew in the face of GOP conventionalism and picked Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Lieberman would have solidified that policy position, signaled McCain's commitment to bipartisanship, and solidified a covenant that he's not just towing the rightwing Bush GOP platform. But I believe that John McCain no longer exists.

I don't know about Obama but his groupies disgust me
  • NoHayBanda
Oh G-d, yet another irrational desert religion to be placated in this race.
  • tone_junkie
If McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as potential President of the United States doesn't horrify and repulse any part of your intellectual being, then you have none to speak of. Plain and simple. Even noted conservatives like David Brooks, Peggy Noonan, George Will, David Frum, Kathleen Parker, and Christopher Buckley have all honorably put country first over party or ideology by recognizing it.

Secondly, if McCain's erratic, chicken-with-its-head-cut-off response to the financial crisis because-I-don't-understand-economics-like-I-should-and-I'm-suspending-no-I'm-not-suspending-my-campaign doesn't worry you as a so-called moderate as much as all the Rovian smear bait you've obviously bitten on, then yeah, you're right -- there is no hope. No hope of trying to persuade you with facts or logic.

LOL Obama is just as bad as Carter. What about Dukakis, Mondale and even Kerry? I'd give Dukakis and Mondale the second worst ever, not Obamama. Besides what is wrong with Carter? He was incompetent, Like George W, but at least his religious views weren't phony like many candidates, both Repugs and Demonocrat.

exactly. And while you're at it support an adminstration that supports Columbian juntas murdering civilians. It's the same old story, the Burke-Kirkpatrick NWO. Been workin' out real good so far hasn't it. McCain just got endorsed by Cheney. If that's not the kiss of Darth I don't know what is.

McCain went from an honorable "maverick" to a dishonest scumbag in 6 months. Telling, very telling.
    Such a mean old man.....

Why Holly needs to fact check on her list of why she's not crazy about Obama.

Look I understand this is your opinion but if you are going to be part of editorial here, get a clue, please.

    1) Obama does not have the experience and has no business whatsoever running for President at this time. - Obama was vetted up and down by generals and ex-Presidents-what do you want- Moses from the mount coming down to deliver his holy Word? Or maybe Pastor Mutheee, witch doctor extrordanaire????

    2) Obama does not have a sufficiently long voting record for proper evaluation. - Palin has? McCains been there forever, just as Biden- NEGATED.

    3) Obama has clearly exhibited pro-Palestinian behavior. I call bullshit on this. Where, when and how? He has avowed support for Israel- but that doesn't mean he's gonna call the mohel and have a bris.

    4) Obama has a lot of nasty friends. So does McCain- G Gordon Liddy, Hagee, Robertson, Stevens,Palin yada yada...NEGATED. can't swing a dead cat in Washington without hitting someone with a shady past. Guilt by association crap.

    5) Obama does not inspire hope. - Not in you, but that's ok, 50+million other people see differently

    6) The more I watch him, listen to him and read his speeches the less I like him. -That's because , like a parachute a mind only works when opened, and the smear-static has caused corrosion on your synapses and has colored your judgements. Funny because most times the opposite applies.

    7) I do not agree with or trust him on the Iraq War let alone the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Israel/Palestine has been an issue for DECADEs- this adminstration has done it's damnedest to undo the work of the past 4 administrations. you think McCain will do better HAH!

I think you're still sore hillary didn't get the nomination. Get over yourself. Bill and Hill support Obama.

    >>3) Obama has clearly exhibited pro-Palestinian behavior.<<

You goofed up when making your list. This should be listed in the column of positive attributes, not negative.
  • Loviatar
    Thank you Holly.

This post has done more to bring everyone to my point-of-view regarding you and your ilk than any comment I could have wrote. Your close minded view of the middle east and your out right bigotry has finally come out for all to see.

Once again, thank you for this special October surprise.
  • 3) Obama has clearly exhibited pro-Palestinian behavior.

If it were true, which it isn't, it'd be a breath of fresh air. The Palestinians, despite what hardliners would have us believe, are people too. Why don't you try living in Gaza for a while and telling us what you think about conditions there?
  • DLS
What is going to happen to the silly "progressive" Obama groupies the Morning After the election, or at least after the extra-silly cheering and blathering about it on the networks and NPR has subsided? What happens when instant magic fails to materialize?

Even on radio shows like "Keep Hope Alive" (hosted by the Rev. Jesse Jackson), to which I was listening this morning, which features not a silly play-pen-liberal-blogger-style leftism but a more dinosaur-like stuck-in-the-Sixties activism (by the same people, in the case of Jackson), there are unrealistic expectations. They will be shattered and what will everybody do if the Dems firmly control Congress as well as the White House and have no more excuses and Republicans to "blame" for their own failures? (Aside from continuing to "blame" Republicans, that is.)

You're probably guaranteed your American Idol this year. (Black Americans have the right to be overcome with joy if Obama wins, and with grief at coming so close if he loses; the silly white progressives crying more than black Americans are, to say the least, silly.) What will you do when you have to (someday) face the real world? Or if you realize that Obama is far from perfect (much less guaranteed to be in office eight years, as we commonly hear expections of lefties that that will happen)?

Kind of like how Holly has already done.
  • DLS
Food for thought, for some more rabid Dems who need to do some thinking. Obama, at least, is playing it safe.

  • SteveK
Food for thought... Has DLS considered the possibility that the reason he receives few, if any, replies to his comments is not because of his positions (which he seems to think irrefutable)... but because of his constant need to belittle ANY and EVERY one on the left.

DLS, It's attitudes and actions like yours that have caused the upcoming Obama Landslide. Your (and the GOPs) "silly "progressive" Obama groupies"... "silly play-pen-liberal-blogger-style leftism"... "rabid Dems" shtick just didn't, and doesn't, work. If you'd have paid any attention to the response the American people are giving McCain's campaign "style" you wouldn't have to be told.

It's time for the name calling to stop and America to start moving forward together... I hope that both you and Holly take the time to vote on Tuesday.

    ThinkingOnMyOwnTwoFeet,

FWIW, I don't (and never have) had it out for you. Sometimes my lack of the right word may make it seem that way but in all seriousness it has never been personal.

Keep the faith... There's more to then politics in this world and I'd be sorry if you left.

    Thank you,

    Steve

Thank you very much Steve - I appreciate that. :) I agree that sometimes it is hard to find the right words to express ourselves - it happens to me as well. :)
