Colin Powell’s Revenge

As political observers parse The Endorsement, the unspoken element is the payback of Colin Powell, no matter how much he denies it, for the humiliation he suffered at the hands of Dick Cheney’s gang in being forced to act as UN point man in justifying the invasion of Iraq with cooked intelligence.

Yes, Powell gives Obama credibility as commander-in-chief and a leader who will be able to reach across party lines. No, contrary to Rush Limbaugh et al, the endorsement is not racially based.

But behind Powell’s calm, rational demeanor in explaining his decision on Meet the Press Sunday, he would be less than human if his own treatment by the Bush Administration were not involved in his thinking and, more to the point, feeling.

Before Iraq, Powell was the one of the most admired men in America, who might have been nominated for President in 1996 if he agreed to run. Today he is remembered for that February 2003 speech that misled Americans into believing Saddam Hussein had WMDs.

Powell should have been president instead of W-- his temperment, wisdom and moderate views remind me of Eisenhower, who is looking wiser and wiser as time goes by-- both in his decision to end the Korean War, building the interstate hwy system, and his stated warning that feeding the military-industrial complex would deprive us of money to help the poor and disadvantaged.

Guess our parents never realized ol' Ike was really a communist- not a great war hero! ;-) This is O/T but I would like Obama to fight back harder on the socialist charges by pointing to presidents like Ike and FDR and Kennedy who

believed in free markets but who also believed in government programs that help defeat poverty and disease.

He's not alone. More than one victim's career lays in ruins from the Bush/Cheney/GOP cut-n-run politics that involve sacraficing any lamb necessary to keep the machine running.

Many Congresspeople are feeling the sting of being lied to by "cooked intelligence" and making crucial (and wrong) decisions based on misinformation, spiced and served to them in Cafe Fear.

Though instead of covert malice, I would assign intelligence to Powell's comments and endorsement. Being a man of honor (still), and one who deeply loves this country, who better than he would know the fatal error of choosing four more years in light of the consequences begot by the last eight. Needing "change" is not just a buzzword. Powell knows that real change is open-heart surgery that this country needs to stay alive.

My bet is that was his ultimate motivation.

This election and the aftermath is more likely to be the Liberals' Revenge:
