DLS,

Huge new taxes will also imspire a return to massive tax cheating. With the U.S. being a one party state, there will no way for the middle class to use the politicalsystem to change the tax burden. So, people will take it upon themsleves to reduce their taxes through fraud.

A good question is whether Congress is willing to bring back the enforcement arm of the IRS that the Republicans got rid of?

Super D -- conservatism logically should grow in the years to come, as the Baby Boomer cohort and the overall population ages. (Experience and wisdom, you understand.) That's despite middle-class entitlement dependency and the likely eventual federal provision of health care.

Also, arguably, yes, inflation (and a repetition of liberalism's failures) Seventies-style is likely, given liberals in charge in Washington _plus_ a large-scale asset sell-off by the Baby Boomers to finance future retirements (i.e., we'll get a 1970s-style bear market in all kinds of asset classes, in addition to inflation) _plus_ a labor shortage and many consumers seeking what's provided by fewer producers.

But between now and then, a deflationary spiral is possible. It depends on people's mindsets and the state of their current (and near-to-mid-term) household finances. Huge new taxes imposed by Obama would risk triggering such a deflationary spiral.

Conservatisim is dead. Demographics was going to kill it but the incomptence of the Bush Administraiton sped up the process. More than 50% of the people believe that they can vote themselves things from the government and pass on the costs to others. The big spending Republicans have to credible answer to that position.

The real quesiton is how will the culture of the U.S. change with the coming one party state and massive increases in government spending. My guess is that the U.S. will go back to the tax cheating ways of the 1960's and 70's.
