I disagree that Will was suggesting Obama got Powell's endorsement solely because of race. Will is saying that Obama represents a new image of black politics beyond Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and a lot of white – and black conservative – voters find that very appealing. His “two for one” margin is unlikely. But there IS a lot of excitement about the history of the candidacy. That doesn't mean it's “racist” to support Obama for that. In fact, it's the very twisted politics of racial conservatism to suggest that excitement over a black candidate is racist. No, it's history.
