Bruce Cockburn: An Appreciation

01aaabrucecockburn.jpg

It would be nice to say that while Bruce Cockburn is best known for his socially conscious songs, he also is a great guitarist. But unless you dwell at the left end of things — whether it be politics or the FM radio dial — it is unlikely that you’ve ever heard of the Canadian singer-songwriter.

That is a damned shame because there is not merely a currency to Cockburn’s songs but a wonderful poetic depth, such as in these lyrics from “Pacing the Cage”:

Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it’s pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you live too long
Days drip slowly on the page
You catch yourself
Pacing the cage

Cockburn, who was born in 1945, grew up on a farm near Pembroke, Ontario. His interest in music was sparked when he found a guitar in his grandmother’s attic that he played along to radio hits.

I couldn't agree more. Even "Speechless" is wonderful.

    I never lived with balance
    I always wake up nervous
    Light comes at me sideways
    I hold my breath forever
    I never lived with balance
Though Ive always liked the notion
    I feel an endless hunger
    For energy and motion

Boy, how did I miss this guy? I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but I never heard of him before. So I started listening. Pretty good stuff. Darn good. Thanks for the tip! In the process I found this offering on YouTube for Pacing the Cage. The image montage is pretty compelling.

One other I really like is My Beat. It has a more "pedestrian" theme (actually "pedalist" theme, lol!), but it has the added advantage of featuring Patty Griffin on back-up vocals, who is another extraordinary artist that gets far too little attention (except by other musicians).

Being Canadian I have been a Cockburn (pronounced coeburn) fan since the 70's and have lost track of the number of times I've seen him in concert. His new stuff is great but do yourselves a favour and track down some of his early albums too. His live album "Circles in the Stream" covers some of the old favorites and gives a good taste of what he can do in person. He's a monster guitar player and a fabulous writer. If you ever have the chance to catch him in concert, don't hesitate - go!
  • Never seen him in concert, except on TV, but I too have been a fan since the 70s. Great music, greater lyrics.
