McCain: So Little Time, So Many Excuses

01aaatmv_trainwreck.jpg

With the clock running out on the 2008 presidential race and John McCain sinking like a stone, the excuses for why his campaign has come a cropper are flying fast and furious.

I’ve been collecting them over at Kiko’s House in a daily feature titled “McCain-Palin Trainwreck Excuse du Jour.” Here are synopses and links to the first seven entries:

Sarah Palin can’t be controlled.

Leading Republicans are turning on him.

Obama is getting off easy because he’s black.

His campaign advisers are a disaster.

He’s not a true conservative.

The GOP’s class warfare has cost him dearly.

And my favorite:

He’s just not comfortable playing the bad guy.

The clock is running out on the non-excuses for beating a certain dead horse.

There's a six point spread, according to the CNN "poll of polls" for Oct. 16. The gap is shrinking. Expect a late October "surprise" from the McCain camp, timed to close this gap leading up to election day. It'll be a late night on November 4!

Until Obama is actually sworn in as president, I'm not prepared to make any predictions or assumptions. The GOP is not going to roll over and give up, and trust me on this; they have not run out of tactics yet. Two and half weeks is enough time to shift the balance, particularly when the Bradley effect is taken into account. All I'm saying is this: The Obama campaign can't afford to coast, not even in November.
