More on the McCain Campaign YouTube Letter: The Cynical View. And Debate. »
To my earlier point — namely, that Obama would win even if McCain played the card he does not want to play — you gotta read this slice of life, courtesy of one of Ben Smith’s Republican sources. Wow.
The Bush administration's failures have fractured the coalition– losing the Reagan Democrats– who mostly saw the GOP as caring about the man on the street. Now they realize that Bush was never a guy like them, and didn't look out for them at all. That's not to say McCain wouldn't– because even on his worst day he's got more integrity than W, but all the same, he'll take the fall.
I've heard speculation that, no, this won't be 1980, but it may be like 1984 (these people saying these things never refer to 1994, surprisingly), not the number of states that Obama will carry but with respect to vote shares.

Note to Pete, my buddy and I in Atlanta got cynical enjoyment when encountering numerous claims based on the title of this thread, when describing the stock bubble in the 1990s. (along with other nice statements, such as “Growth Forever”)
