I suspect McCain won't change his prospects for election in tonight's debate.

Maybe McCain is trying to be a "nice Senator to President Obama" or maybe it's something more ambitious or self-seeking, namely wanting to be Obama's new Secretary of Defense.

While race could be a major factor in McCain's decision, I also think that he may also be well aware of Rev. Wright's military service, first as a Marine and then as a Navy corpsman. While many veterans groups are a little iffy on McCain's vet voting record, I do believe he's got a deep loyalty to people who have served --- especially those who have in the Navy.

I could be wrong, but I get that sense.

If he brings up Wright, Obama could highlight some anti-Israel comments Palin's pastor made, or reveal that McCain is not a regular church-goer.

McCain is way behind Obama in campaign funding- so Obama is able to run both positive and negative ads-- while McCain can only afford the negative ones. I don't think going negative will work with McCain- because his old image was that he wouldn't stoop that low, but that has been destroyed during this election.

Team McCain is still trying desperately to sideline the real issues that they perish talking about. The economy and the failed Iraq war (yes, failed, even with the "surge" that didn't work), are issues that McCain cannot talk down.

The fact that McCain has no real viable solution to those two colossal problems should scare the pants off of voters. It will, if they are led gently away from tabloidism and back to the glaring, stark reality of issues that truly matter to them.
