JS- They haven't been a big-tent for a long time--- more like a pup!

Its a shame because CB is witty, intelligent and interesting-- just like his famous dad. Its NR's loss- now they'll end up with party hacks spewing RNC talking points.

I said nothing about the media because the GOP's dysfunction and its causes are the central issue and that's what all the politicians and commentators will likely address.

Oh, I bet there's going to be infighting. Even if it doesn't lead to understanding, admission of problems, etc., it will be the preferred cathartic, I suspect. Not everything can be blamed on the media. And remember, there was fighting during the GOP primaries (that was when Town Hall was entertaining). A lot of it got suppressed (to a surreal extent) in the convention and the tension is just going to be released after Election Day. That's my guess, anyway. The "hudna" or feud-truce will expire.

Actually, Spence, what's interesting about not Buckley more than McCain is that the GOP leadership (let's say personified by the National Review here), because McCain often has been who he has been, appears here to be blatantly partisan, _not_ ideological. In this sense, Superdestroyer and his "McCain, the next Dole" theme (he gets more credit than I ever do for this) is being vindicated. For what matters most is having _anybody_ with an R stamped on him or her (even Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins, Dems in Republican drag, effectively) retain the White House for four more years.

I agree with what DLS said abour RINOs and temporary convenience.

I'm not so sure about the postmortem infighting. I wonder if a lot of that hasn't already been played out. Reformers are pre-disapproved. The Republicans who remain will likely feel that McCain just wasn't hardcore enough.

RINO : A republican who has become broadminded and objective enough to not let the party do all their thinking for them.

R-epublican I-s N-ow O-bjective. ;-)

McCain himself has a RINO reputation, which GOP members have overlooked to a surreal extent merely to form a coalition of temporary convenience to try to prevent the White House from going Democratic.

And just wait for the post-mortem infighting and mutual recrimination that happens after Election Day. (To plagiarize, not merely paraphrase, Peggy Noonan, lefties get to Savor that more than the Obama victory, possibly.)
