As for the so-called Jones Generation, if every sub-group can be a "generation," then why not every year, why not every individual? It's a way of supporting a Boomer without having to support a Boomer. So, why not change the dates of Generation X so no one is a member of Generation X, instead just call them Generation Smith, Generation Jane, Generation whatever. In that way no one would have to be a member of that loser generation.

It is amazing how when one moron says something clearly false the web parrots capture the nonsense and run with it all over the web. Obama IS A BABY BOOMER. Wake up! He may not fit your gross image of Baby Boomers, but Obama was born within the time of Baby Boomers. He is a late Baby Boomer.

The Baby Boomers in the USA are those born during the years 1946-1964.

Yes, EJ Dionne is right; Obama’s separating himself from the Boomers was a central part of his original announcement and message, and it does give him a unique position to move the country past sixties-fueled culture wars.

Relevantly, his actual post-Boomer generation has gained attention through this. As numerous experts have pointed out, Obama is a member of Generation Jones–born 1954 to 1965, between the Boomers and Xers.

Here is a very relevant new video on exactly this topic: it has a ton of top pundits (e.g. Clarence Page, David Brooks, Karen Tumulty, Howard Wolfson, Michael Barone, Dick Morris, etc.) discussing the fact that Obama is a Joneser, and the surprisingly large role of GenJones in this election, the video is 5 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ta_Du5K0jk

I find it amusing that Mr. Tactics & Strategy is being out done by Mr. Naivety. He's a millitary man, fighting a two front war almost never works.

Obama has a big ad blitz prepared. Logic compels a strong effort to end the race, something by which I chose as a metaphor the finishing effort (the "kick") by Lasse Viren against Steve Prefontaine and the rest of the field at the Olympic 5000 final in 1972. Push hard at end and finish as fast or as hard as you can, in other words.

[last mile -- pay attention specifically to final straight stretch in final lap]

www.runnerspace.com/video.php?do=view&video_id=...

As to your point #2 - I find it hard to believe that McCain is going to walk right into the "Ayers issue" during the debate. Just the way Obama and Biden have handled this so far seems to scream "SETUP!" If they've goaded McCain into raising this issue at the debate, it's only because they feel they have an appropriate response at the ready, something they'll be able to use to slam him the moment he utters the name Ayers.

If McCain really is going to walk into that (and how can he not, now that he's publicly stated he plans to bring it up) he's far less prepared to be president than I would have thought. Never let your opponent goad you into addressing an issue that they WANT addressed. If Obama had continued to ignore the Ayers issue, and never basically dared McCain to bring it up, then I'd say McCain might have a decent strategy on his hands (aside from announcing it to the world a day before the debate - what was it he said last debate about speaking softly and not telegraphing his moves to our enemies?). But in this case, I think he's walking straight into a trap that Obama and Biden have laid. It certainly doesn't appear to be an elegantly laid trap, but it looks like it has done the job of drawing McCain in.

Of course, I'm biased because I'm voting for Obama. And if Obama doesn't have a ready response in the debate, then he looks more the fool - but I'd have a hard time believing he's not ready for this issue to be raised.
