After 8 years of standing by W, Conservatives are no longer willing to invest in another failed politician or candidacy. The Bush presidency set up the McCain candidacy for failure, and set up the entire party for implosion.

As for the market's rally today, the reason seems to be a heavy dose of socialism. The European governments essentially nationalized the banking system. And Henry Paulson is about to do the same thing here.

I don't rule anything out, but if McCain is going to effect some transformational bump then he'd better get crackin, cuz the next 3 weeks are going to go zipping by. Speaking of all the R defections, I'm a little curious about whether or not Colin Powell is going to endorse anyone… maybe not.
