I think what most liberals (and quite a few conservatives too) think is over the line are the comparisons to Bin Laden (made by the VA head of the state GOP), saying he pals around with terrorists (Palin) , using his middle name to stir up crowds, and just standing around while supporters are yelling “kill him” or “traitor”.

Gotta go with Kathryn on this one — this is not something I've seen the lefty blogs holding up as racist or incendiary. I've heard mention of the line, yes, but the tone is more like Obama and Biden themselves took up — they are just HOPING that McCain will bring up the slander crap at the debates, to Obama's face, because it will be a chance for Obama to slam him for his outright lies, his exaggerations, and maybe even get in a few punches on McCain's own (and arguably more damning) suspect associations. In short: he's going to kick Obama's ass? I'd enjoy nothing more than watching him try, and fail miserably.

I saw it on two networks today and was contacted by one Democrat and one Republican who work with the campaigns about it. It's not burning up the wires like the “terrorist!” or “kill 'em” stuff, but I found it rather sad that it was getting as much play as it is. And, obviously, both ABC and the AP picked it up for the wires.

Kathryn, if what you are reporting is accurate (i'll let you do the perusing so I don't have to), I think that's a valid point. I've certainly had the same objection when people here post about some outrageous claim by 'the right' or make overblown claims about the right wing blogosphere going nuts about something, just because perhaps one person made a stupid remark.

Jazz, are you really hearing this a lot, or just an offhand comment?

I know I trend liberal. I like sites like Sullivan's and Balloon Juice,and the Jed Report, not to mention an occasional peek at the GOS and Huff Post. This is the first mention I have seen of this comment. They seem much more concerned about the people at the McCain rallies shouting “terrorist.” McCain is getting some credit for finally speaking out about it on Friday (Palin's not doing anything similiar).

This is the equivalent of the McCain camp suggesting that Obama called Palin a pig, LOL.

Both camps are seizing on whatever idiotic soundbite will get their supporters angry enough to turn out in droves in 3 weeks. I wonder what its like to go through tape of every word Obama or Mc utter — thinking “can we use it? How do we get this on the 6 'o' clock news?”
