JSpencer, Yes, this issue crosses political boundaries. In his piece Pollan points to The American Conservative magazine, which said in this article in the June 30 issue that "This is a conservative cause if ever there was one, and it is going to have to begin at home. The revolution is coming. And it’s sure to be delicious."

I'm pretty much in support of Free Trade, but I think there are some good arguments that not everything works well when taken to the global marketplace. Furthermore, some of the arguments made by Pollard are even further entwined. Biofuel subsidies, for instance.

I'm no whiz on this subject. If we (the US) limited ourselves to producing food for our own consumption, how much of a surplus would we have?

Joe, thanks for bring up this great subject. It really needs to be on everyone's radar. Maybe folks are finally starting to figure out that matters of the environment aren't just the province of liberal special interest groups and are in fact the province of ALL of us. Maybe people are starting to realize the old ways of farming (and eating) are no longer sustainable. I am so looking forward to the approaching day when "SCIENCE" is once again taken seriously by the White House, and not treated as an annoying option. And yes, I'll bet we are going to be seeing a LOT more people planting personal vegetable gardens next year...
