Poli-Techno Memeorandum Colors

If you’re running Firefox and you’ve installed Greasemonkey, you can now view memeorandum in full living “political-bias” colors.

While most political blogs are extremely partisan, their biases aren’t immediately obvious to outsiders like me. I wanted to see, at a glance, how conservative or liberal the blogs were without clicking through to every article.

With the help of del.icio.us founder Joshua Schachter, we used a recommendation algorithm to score every blog on Memeorandum based on their linking activity in the last three months.

So… I’m now running the script w/ my browser, and I see The Moderate Voice showing up on memeorandum as dark blue. Evidently, TMV links to a lot of stories that liberals seem to find interesting.

Note: The colors don’t necessarily represent each blogger’s personal views or biases. It’s a reflection of their linking activity. The algorithm looks at the stories that bloggers linked to before, relative to all other bloggers, and groups them accordingly.

Things that make you go Hmmmm….

As an aside… my personal blog is in the data set also, but since I’m no longer linked by memeorandum, I haven’t got a clue what color I’d show up as. The data points they used surpass my ability to interpret…

Speaking of the TMV website, I noticed something very...peculiar about The Moderate Voice starting a week or two ago. Maybe it's my browser (firefox), or something else, or maybe it's just me.

I would go to www.themoderatevoice.com , and notice that sometimes the site would not appear to be updated for one or two days at a time. Yet I would go over to memeorandum and it would reference newer TMV articles that didn't show up on the home page. Hmmmm.

At one point last week, I clicked on the "Home" link on the left-hand side of the page, and it brought up the new, correct, updated TMV website. The difference? That link would go to themoderatevoice.com -- SANS the www at the beginning.

So it appears there is some strange disconnect going on between www.themoderatevoice.com and themoderatevoice.com - where the former is only updated/refreshed infrequently. And this seemed to start happening in the past couple of weeks.
  • Yes! I've been having that problem also! I thought it was something with my cache...

    T-Steel?
  • HMMMM!!!! Interesting. Methinks it's something with TMV's site cache. I will check it out. Thanks for noticing mlhradio!
  • YIKES! There was definitely a problem. I found it and fixed it. Unfortunately it's going to take about 3 - 4 hours for the change to do through the 'Net. So www.themoderatevoice.com will probably appear broken until then. But themoderatevoice.com will work.

Speaking of Greasemonkey and Memeorandum, I'm not surprised at the dark blue. We have some very opinionated writers giving McCain the blues so alot of left blogs are going to link.

Hi T-Steel, I sent this issue in several days ago through the Contact Us feature, thinking that went to you. Did you never receive those messages? I had just assumed you had a life to lead, but I wonder if that feature isn't working properly?

Going back to the post, I am glad that they colored everything. Sometimes I end up on sites I don't agree with. I hate that.
  • "Sometimes I end up on sites I don't agree with. I hate that. "

Paca -- I sometimes spend whole days reading sites I don't agree with. May I ask why you don't like to do that?
  • pacatrue
Sorry, polimom, failed sarcasm. I was attempting to ridicule people who only wish to read sites they already agree with by being snarky. I'm a member of Red State myself, just to hear things I don't like (though I haven't gone by in a couple weeks).
  • LOL!!!! Okay -- my bad! (didn't seem to fit you anyway, which is what prompted the reply)

So I see I'm not the only one with refresh issues. The really weird thing is that I have no issue on my PC, but on my iPod Touch I always get a page that's 1 or 2 days old. It's annoying, especially because I like to load pages before leaving home and read them on the subway.

Polimom, I detect a heaping pile of irony in pacatrue's comment.

update: I see I was beat to the punch on the last bit

Thanks, mom, for putting some objective evidence up that proves to our "centrist" authors that they view the world through rather heavily blue-tinted glasses.

I can only hope this causes them to pause when they think Josh Marshal, Andrew Sullivan or Marc Ambinder somehow offer support for a center point of view.

At least Moulitas has the stones to label himself correctly.
  • Lynx, I feel dopey. Seriously. My humor meter needs recharged badly...

    :<
  • Lynx
Polimom, don't worry about it. You can start recharging on Nov. 5th. Right now we're all a little strung out . We've had months of overload that's hard to take for even we hardened politholics.
