Palin is McCain's personal pit bull in heels. When ordered to attack, she does so, and enables McCain to appear above the fray.

I also think McCain didn't bring up those smears because they would have made him look ridiculous before 70 million Americans, and he might have lost the debate
because voters perceived him as deranged and desperate!

McCain did not want to go there. Once McCain brings up Wright, Ayers, etc. then Obama can bring up the Keating Five connections, Hagee, Palin's (and her husband's) associations, etc... I know that Palin isn't running for prez but she is running to be second in command and if she and her husband supports teh Alaska Independent Party, which calls for the separation of the US, then that's much more valid then Obama's association with Ayers who is now a professor at a respected institution.

Apparently he's content to let Sarah do the dirty work for him... which she does with relish. Of course there's a limit to what McCain's going to say while actually sharing the stage with Obama. I have to say, he came across as rather old, repetitive and jerky tonight. Also he still has trouble looking Obama in the eye. I'm thinking he actually dislikes Obama. I suppose that's no surprise.
