Sorry, Bill Kristol. McCain did not use the smear card tonight in the debate. Doggone, I know you are very disappointed, but who really cares about that.
Just a short and from-the-gut reaction to this aspect of tonight’s debate.
After all the muckraking—uncomfortably close to inflammatory incitement—by his pit-bull running mate, I was amazed that McCain did not get into the gutter tonight, even though he had plenty of opportunity, regardless of the debate format.
I am sure the pundits will have many more in-depth explanations and rationalizations. Perhaps McCain and his campaign started to see and feel the blow-back that was coming. Perhaps McCain had a sincere change of heart and decided to live by his own campaign promises. If so, good for him, and for our country.
But, if after not using the smear card tonight, McCain uses that card tomorrow, or during the next few days, it would be my personal opinion that McCain did not have the guts to tell Obama to his face what Sarah Palin has been accusing him of during the last few days. And, if McCain himself does not use the smear card during his own appearances, but permits or encourages his lady pit-bull to continue to do his dirty work for him, I would have even more serious questions about his machismo.
Chris Matthews said the same thing. McCain is apparently a coward AND a liar. Ouch.
Apparently he's content to let Sarah do the dirty work for him… which she does with relish. Of course there's a limit to what McCain's going to say while actually sharing the stage with Obama. I have to say, he came across as rather old, repetitive and jerky tonight. Also he still has trouble looking Obama in the eye. I'm thinking he actually dislikes Obama. I suppose that's no surprise.

McCain did not want to go there. Once McCain brings up Wright, Ayers, etc. then Obama can bring up the Keating Five connections, Hagee, Palin's (and her husband's) associations, etc… I know that Palin isn't running for prez but she is running to be second in command and if she and her husband supports teh Alaska Independent Party, which calls for the separation of the US, then that's much more valid then Obama's association with Ayers who is now a professor at a respected institution.
Palin is McCain's personal pit bull in heels. When ordered to attack, she does so, and enables McCain to appear above the fray.
I also think McCain didn't bring up those smears because they would have made him look ridiculous before 70 million Americans, and he might have lost the debate
because voters perceived him as deranged and desperate!
