Funny you bring up the Gore reference. I didn't think it was the name-dropping that made him look condescending. It was the bizarre walk toward Bush and the sighs.

And I thought the "you don't understand" line was much like Gore.

I certainly did not think the name-dropping was inappropriate either. In fact, I didn't notice it as name-dropping.
