A Higher-Ed Version of Homeschooling

The Chronicle:

Who needs college credit when you have a makeshift diploma from a superstar professor?

David Wiley taught an online course at Utah State University last fall and let anyone fully participate, even if they weren’t enrolled. In the end, five people the registrar had never heard of joined discussions with the 15 or so regular students and got papers graded by Mr. Wiley, who considered the extra work a public service….

Open Teaching is the name Mr. Wiley and others use for their experimental knowledge giveaway. And it suggests how the Web could soon force colleges to re-examine their offerings in the age of digital delivery….

Imagine the hosts of the TV show Myth Busters offering a course on the scientific method delivered via the Discovery Channel’s Web site. Or Malcolm Gladwell, author of the best-selling Tipping Point, teaching an online business course on The New Yorker’s site. Or a retired Nobel Prize winner teaching via a makeshift virtual classroom set up on her personal blog.

Ee-gads! Yes, imagine…

e-learning is generating a lot of buzz throughout the Educational Literature. While I highly doubt e-learning to take over your typical lecture, I can see it playing a more dominate role with content delivery. “I think that we’re seeing a change in the educational landscape,” she said. “We are the first generation of teachers who are preparing kids for jobs that haven’t even been invented yet. The truth is, computers will never replace teachers, but teachers who are able to use technology to learn, build, [and] create are going to replace those who are not,” she said.
