A Musical Interlude: Cuban Pete

With so much grim economic news and political partisans screaming at each other (and those in the middle) it’s time to offer some fun things on TMV once more. So for starters:

Here is my favorite You Tube lip synch. A young teen lip synching Jim Carey’s version of Cuban Pete as done in The Mask. This kid (now two years older) is a genius:

And here is the ORIGINGAL Cuban Pete the Carey lampooned: Desi Arnaz’s famous performance on the classic 1950s sitecom “I Love Lucy.” A tidbit 4 U: I worked on the San Diego Union newspaper for nearly 10 years. Arnaz was a legend in San Diego county. He lived in Del Mar and was beloved. He would call the paper’s TV critic from time to time and was a favorite in Del Mar — in the city by the sea and at its famous racetrack.

Sure was fun watching Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. Helps get my morning off to a good start!

It is interesting . . . in viewing these old YouTube finds of Joe's . . . to see how aware some of these old performers were of their bodies in space.

Arnaz is much better here than Ball . . . his every move is perfect, from his hands to his playing with his hat, to his dancing.

This is something that has been lost with the decline of vaudeville. One can look at movies or TV today, and though the actors hit their marks, they clearly lack this awareness.

(An exception to this can be found in many Hong Kong action films...which were based heavily on alumni from Peking Opera Schools).

Great post. Always fascinating to see a professional at the top of his game.

    Just an FYI -
"Cuban Pete" was a 1946 movie starring Desi Arnaz as himself.
