I agree with Mr. Lips's assessment that Sarah Palin has energized the Republican base and improved McCain's chances of winning the election. Note that the crowds are much larger when McCain appears with her than when he appears alone. However, I think she also energizes the Democrtic base and will not have terrific appeal to swing voters, who will ultimately decide this election, more so than the Foxworthy voters he is discussing.

I am a white collar, Christian, big city, non gun toting, pro-life, conservative. What Ned fails to realize is that a MAJORITY of people in the US relate to the sterotypes that he describes. If they turn out to vote, Barack Hussein Obama is toast.....

Holly_in_Cincinnati: Not sure if your serious, or not, but you asked for it...

Jeff Foxworthy is a comedian who's famous for, affectionate, "jokes" about Rednecks, like:

If you refer to the 2nd grade as, "My senior year"... You might be a Redneck.

or

If your family tree has branches that point upwards... You might be a Redneck.

P, you have just seriously depressed me. Who knew I had to clog my arteries with steak and vegetate on the sofa in front of my big screen to be normal? If that's what it takes I'll pass, thanks.

JSpencer,
Well said. I've got some redneck tendencies of my own. But I recognize the difference between "good country people" and conservative Republicans. A lot of genuine rednecks despise Republicans and are unimpressed by McCain or Palin.

It's also worth pointing out that here in the South the "redneck archetype" often stands in opposition to the "conservative Christian archetype." Quite often the two hate each other. Talk about preachers and getting born again to beer-drinking bikers and hot-rodders and you're not going to be well-received.

Since the writer of the article is a former attorney and big city business strategist, you'll have to pardon me if I have a few doubts about the accuracy of his stereotyping. If fact some of the people he's talking about might have doubts about his stereotyping as well. Some of them might even take offense. Fact is, the strongest common thread among Palin supporters is strong republican partisanship, not the degree to which their necks are red. By the way, how close do you think Palin's son is going to get to actual "fighting" in Iraq? You'll have to pardon me if I have some doubts about that too.

Normality is based upon consumption. Steak is normal, while sushi is not. This is true even if you can eat sushi cheaper than steak. Iceberg lettuce is normal, while arugula is not. Green leaf is suspect. A $40,000 pick-up truck is normal but a $30,000 Volvo is not. A $2000 big screen TV is normal, but a $600 ticket to Paris is borderline communist.

And of course this all reverses for someone with different experiences in life. "Normal" is almost entirely just unacknowledged cultural warfare.

"Disparaging normal, decent people . . ."

I hate the term "normal" when talking about groups of people in this country. There are millions of coastal, educated "elites" (and many educated people who live in the Heartland as well), why are they less "normal" than these Foxworthy voters?

It is interesting that these people are the ones being left behind by globalization because of a lack of real leadership directing them towards the future. Instead they get conservative pandering every election cycle and then ignored by conservative policies.

Disparaging normal, decent people only earns a backlash. Lefties take notice AGAIN, if you can this time.

"Fence-sitters" will become more like tightrope-walkers by this time next month.

"If you are near the bottom of the totem poll in your world, being a dominant American is at least something." - And this parochial self-serving attitude is why America will probably be, sooner rather than later, less of a leading force more of a sheep to the leaders in the future.

So in other words, these voters really do "cling to guns and religion" because government doesn't solve their problems.
