The Duke and the Gov.

What would John Wayne or Audie Murphy have said if they had ever run for President? I think we saw the political equivalent of “Marshal Rooster J. Cogburn” gearing up for his last battle against the enemy of good folks everywhere.

Many of my colleagues have written insightful posts on Senator McCain’s speech last night, so I have decided to skip the message and focus on possible public perception issues for the Republican Party for the last eight weeks of this election cycle.

McCain’s speech was sincere and true to his character but it wasn’t captivating. Compared to Governor Palin’s speech on Wednesday evening, the McCain speech was more circumstance and less pomp. The perception problem for McCain is not going to be how he matches up with Obama; his effectiveness is going to be measured by whether his stability is as engaging as Palin’s intensity.

John McCain’s decision to change the face of the election has been successful. In 2008, the Republican Party has the embodiment of “True Grit” and Annie Oakley on their national ticket. There is only room for one larger than life persona for the public to embrace. Beginning next week, we will see where the attention of the public and the media gravitate. If Sarah Palin is still THE story on October 1st, John McCain will be on his way back to Arizona…riding into the sunset.

  • John Wayne won (or was given) the election in 2000. :-)
  • Seriously though, we'll have to wait and see how often the McCain camp lets Palin out of hiding. She could certainly steal the spotlight if given free reign.

In the Washington Saloon, neither George W. Bush (the oft-confused sheriff; the town is run by the stern banker) nor John McCain (the old Indian fighter now settled at the bar hoping to get the seat the sheriff likes to occupy) are John Wayne.

Ronald Reagan might have been able to do an imitation, right after attacking Libya, and if he were more deft at handling public relations with Soviet-proxy wars in this hemisphere.

Just ask K. Ritter, one of the bartenders (no other occupation as well!), who disdains the sheriff and can't stand the banker.

Chris -- Palin is not hidden, or sequestered, obviously. She has stolen the show this week. McCain will have to risk a good deal of his possible success on her continued appeal, enabling him to "follow through" or at least, in his case, persist on a sufficient level of success to have a chance at winning by default (the rest of his success will depend on to what extent Obama-Biden makes those who pay so much of the taxes nervous). Palin is attractive and helps allay the dissatisfaction (when it is not disgust) so many voters have with the GOP (they're not party-bound, as you saw in 2006).
