The Merits and Demerits of the Palin Speech

Last night, I went to another event sponsored by Log Cabin Republicans at a hotel in Minneapolis. It was among these other Republicans that I watched the Palin speech on TV.

Some thoughts:

Merits:

  • Palin has received a lot of flak for her social conservative views. As a social liberal Republican, that gave me some pause. That said, Palin laid off gay marriage and abortion during her speech, which is a good thing. Hopefully, that’s a good sign for any McCain-Palin administration.
  • She was willing to take on the criticism of being the mayor of a small town. She talked about small town values and was able to link to another person from small town America, who became President: Harry Truman. Very smart.
  • The Vice Presidential candidate is usually considered to be the “attack dog,” and Palin fulfilled that role in spades.
  • Demerits:

  • She was long on rhetoric, but short on policies. Yes, the Veep tends to be the one that says what’s wrong with the other side and tries to persuade people to vote against the other guy, but you also have to say what people are voting for.
  • She was partisan, which again makes sense, but she also needs to try to find ways to get Democrats and independents to vote for that ticket as well. She did a little of that, but not a whole lot.
  • The ending of her speech was kind of odd. It was forceful.
  • All in all, it was a good speech. Of course the next test is her debate with Senator Joe Biden on October 2 at the Vice Presidential debates.

It was better than you describe it.

Looking forward to the debates, both Presidential and VP debates.

Do the Log Cabin Republicans meet in a booth at a restaurant next to the booth holding all of the Jewish Republicans and near the table for four holding all of the black Repubicans.

I can already hear the GOP talking points when Biden bests Palin in the debates -
why how dare that mean old professional politician beat up on the little lady?

She is in the big leagues now and should expect nothing less than to have her entire life scrutinized and everything she has said or done looked at under the proverbial
      microscope.

I thought the peech better than described above, but I am heartened by a reasonably moderate viewpoint being presented here as opposed to hit pieces with a photoshopped pic of Palin toting a gun in a bikini. This is definately a post far more classy.

She and McCain have a winner if they offer real reform; that is *** REAL *** Change [tm], the kind most Americans want, which will include reductions in size of, scope of, and _spending_ by the federal government.
