As for Shaun's descent into really poor behavior, I wonder if he is defensive about Palin's boost to McCain's prospects of winning the White House, or just jealous that even the media realize a phenomenon (not superficial celebrity stuff and PC stuff, either) and a more widespread appeal to Americans than he will admit, much less ever accept.

If she had been picked for VP, McCain would have gone with Lieberman or Romney and Palin would be an unknown governor in Alaska.

This woman is smart, intelligent, witty, politically savy, feminine, tough, a reformer and self-made. No wonder you are so scared of her, she is living proof of a self-made Conservative and threatens the elitism and old boy network of political insideres that manufactured Obama from the halls of the Chicago political machine. She didn't have to use the racism of the church of Jerimiah Wright and the influence of Bill Ayes to get to where she is now. She took on the system and won, not plug herself into the machine and associate with the Tony Rezko's of the world.

I agree with you central point: she is a base solidifier and will have little appeal beyond that.
