Here's a quick take: For the people who run the party, either as officials or as the dependable everyman crusaders on the ground, this is Palin's party. Her form of social conservatism is what really gets them excited. The Party platform is much closer to a Palin platform than a McCain one. However, as the primaries showed, if you look at the Big Tent republican party, it's actually somewhat closer to a McCain. McCain won rather quickly despite the base being either lukewarm or downright hostile to him. There are a lot of Republicans no represented by the Party platform, but they are not actively running the party. I like the question of whether this is Palin's or McCain's party. Problem: Like large majorities of the American public, the press has expressed concern that McCain’s VP pick Sarah Palin is not ready for prime time.

Solution: Shield Sarah Palin from the press until they promise to only pitch softballs.
