It’s Official: The National Enquirer Focuses On Sarah Palin

It’s now official: the National Enquirer is looking into GOP Senator John McCain’s pick for the Veepship, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. And although that might cause some to roll their eyebrows, it can’t help political careers. Just ask Presidents Gary Hart and John Edwards.

The tabloid contends that Palin broke news of her teenage daughter’s pregnancy after they informed her that they knew about it and were going to report it.

Anyone who follows the tabloids (my guilty pleasure is that I have read the Enquirer and Globe for years and had a good friend of mine who was a colleague on the San Diego Union some years ago who had worked for the Enquirer) knows that once it focuses on a target that it deems newsworthy and who can spark brisk checkout stand sales, it keeps investigating.

The danger for the McCain campaign is that if something new surfaces in the Enquirer, it could then be shoved into the mainstream media.

Glad to hear it. National Enquirer will uncover stuff the mainstream media is afraid of. I suspect there is much more to come – and that it will bear out that the McCain campaign didn't properly vet Palin. The questions are: Did McCain make a good decision in his choice of VP? Is Palin qualified to assume the presidency? To both, I would say “no.”

  2. kritt11 says:

McCain's insisting that she was properly vetted- but it sounds like it was a rush job–only undertaken after Karl Rove convinced him to drop Lieberman. The team investigating her arrived in Alaska on Thurs– he announced the pick Friday morning. I'm assuming he didn't want the Democrats to bask in their post-convention glory and build up any momentum with the public and press.

Now that it's widely believed that McCain's vetting of Palin consisted of (not entirely thorough) google searches, the MSM and National Enquirer smell red meat. It's like chumming the waters and telling the sharks to lay off.

I don't read the National Enquirer or other tabloids, but if the NE uncovers something then I'll see it in the MSM. It may turn out to be false (like the Palin/daughter/newborn controversy) or it may turn out to be true.

Given that the nation has to condense years worth of vetting into two months, I'm glad that the NE is trying to uncover the facts about Palin. I hope they are successful, not because I am against Palin (though I am) but because the country needs to know what sort of person Palin is in order to determine whether she would make a good VP.

Now having said that, anything the NE digs up will probably be suspect and some folks won't believe it…. I actually tend not to believe anything the NE writes. But if it makes it to the MSM, then it just may be worthwhile at looking at…

I'm not advocating that we use the NE to vet our candidates, but given the short amount of time we have to get to know Palin, any scrutiny she receives I consider welcome. I think McCain (and the Dem candidates) should be off limits to the NE simply because we are familiar with their years of public service, their records and their clear policies, the vetting they've already received in the media, etc.

Obama said that candidate's families were off-limits to the media madness. Why then is everyone here so avid to destroy Sara Palin's reputation and family. According to Wikipedia, Palin's biography and political record are exemplary, and her ratings in Alaska are higher than any other politician. And if Palin is vetted by the NE or even the MSM, why hasn't Obama been vetted. Instead his history seems to be hidden by the ultra-liberal MSM because they are so anxious for him to win.

McCain wants to usher in a truly brave new mavericky era of the presidency, where important decisions are made on the fly, like a student cramming to get their final assignment done on time. An era when the truth about our leaders can only be backed up by reference to the Enquirer. (I can't wait to see how the footnotes are cited). A bold time when politicians think they can go in and erase references to themselves on the internets, because, if I erase it here, its truly gone right?

Sorry McCain, I want change, not a random change.

Of the many “sordid” secrets in Palin's past, her husband's DUI ~20 years ago happened about the same time that Obama was using crack, right? And if you checked a source other than the MSM, you might learn that she didn't have a hand in having that “policeman” fired–one of her staff took it on himself and was suspended for it. By the way, the policeman had threatened her (and her sister's) father and tasered his stepson, and he didn't do the divorcing–his wife (Palin's sister) did. As a former journalist, I wouldn't believe a thing that the MSM reports. I think the fact that Palin kept her pregnancy going after learning that she was carrying a Down's Syndrome baby, and her daughter decided to keep her baby and marry her 18-year-old boyfriend is what bothers the pro-choice liberals. That might make her more acceptable to the majority of Christians who are pro-life.

The Enquirer may well dig something up, though the bloggers are doing a pretty good job of it so far. But I don't want to focus now on all the family stuff. The entire GOP, right up to and including the POTUS is breathlessly declaring that she has “Executive Experience”! Why, as Sen. McCain pointed out, she first ran for elected office in 1992! (City council of Wasilla, pop. 5,000). Of course as we all know, she went on to become Mayor.

I'd like to bring in an expert on what it takes to be Mayor of Wasilla; former Mayor Sarah Palin. “It’s not rocket science,” Palin said, “It’s $6 million and 53 employees.”

Well, I agree with StockBoy about the NE.

And I agree with Lurxst about McCain making decisions on the fly. He was panicking when the Dem's convention went off without a hitch and their speeches received glowing reviews. In the meantime, his own convention was clouded by the twin problems of the Bush/Cheney presence combined with a possible repeat of the Katrina scenario along the gulf coast.

Palin was quite obviously a desperation pick. We got into the Iraq War without considering the consequences and now are stuck there, spending 12 billion a month until 2010.

Do we really want another executive who is so careless about major decisions?????

His mantra is “country first”— but his VP pick is more like a McCain victory first because it panders to the conservative Christian camp and to disaffected females, who are still angry about Hillary's trreatment by her party.

The National Enquirer IS MSM, and has been for some time. They left the Weekly World News arena a long time ago, and have been breaking major stories over and over again for many years.

I don't know if that is more of an indictment of the MSM or the populace, or both, but it is the reality of it.

(ST. PAUL, MINN.) – John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.
