It’s Official: The National Enquirer Focuses On Sarah Palin

It’s now official: the National Enquirer is looking into GOP Senator John McCain’s pick for the Veepship, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. And although that might cause some to roll their eyebrows, it can’t help political careers. Just ask Presidents Gary Hart and John Edwards.

The tabloid contends that Palin broke news of her teenage daughter’s pregnancy after they informed her that they knew about it and were going to report it.

Anyone who follows the tabloids (my guilty pleasure is that I have read the Enquirer and Globe for years and had a good friend of mine who was a colleague on the San Diego Union some years ago who had worked for the Enquirer) knows that once it focuses on a target that it deems newsworthy and who can spark brisk checkout stand sales, it keeps investigating.

The danger for the McCain campaign is that if something new surfaces in the Enquirer, it could then be shoved into the mainstream media.

Glad to hear it. National Enquirer will uncover stuff the mainstream media is afraid of. I suspect there is much more to come - and that it will bear out that the McCain campaign didn't properly vet Palin. The questions are: Did McCain make a good decision in his choice of VP? Is Palin qualified to assume the presidency? To both, I would say "no."
  • kritt11
McCain's insisting that she was properly vetted- but it sounds like it was a rush job--only undertaken after Karl Rove convinced him to drop Lieberman. The team investigating her arrived in Alaska on Thurs-- he announced the pick Friday morning. I'm assuming he didn't want the Democrats to bask in their post-convention glory and build up any momentum with the public and press.
  • pico13
Now that it's widely believed that McCain's vetting of Palin consisted of (not entirely thorough) google searches, the MSM and National Enquirer smell red meat. It's like chumming the waters and telling the sharks to lay off.
  • StockBoySF
I don't read the National Enquirer or other tabloids, but if the NE uncovers something then I'll see it in the MSM. It may turn out to be false (like the Palin/daughter/newborn controversy) or it may turn out to be true.

Given that the nation has to condense years worth of vetting into two months, I'm glad that the NE is trying to uncover the facts about Palin. I hope they are successful, not because I am against Palin (though I am) but because the country needs to know what sort of person Palin is in order to determine whether she would make a good VP.

Now having said that, anything the NE digs up will probably be suspect and some folks won't believe it.... I actually tend not to believe anything the NE writes. But if it makes it to the MSM, then it just may be worthwhile at looking at...

I'm not advocating that we use the NE to vet our candidates, but given the short amount of time we have to get to know Palin, any scrutiny she receives I consider welcome. I think McCain (and the Dem candidates) should be off limits to the NE simply because we are familiar with their years of public service, their records and their clear policies, the vetting they've already received in the media, etc.

The Washington Post now confirms that the McCain campaign did, indeed, begin its in-depth vet of Palin just last Wednesday.

Obama said that candidate's families were off-limits to the media madness. Why then is everyone here so avid to destroy Sara Palin's reputation and family. According to Wikipedia, Palin's biography and political record are exemplary, and her ratings in Alaska are higher than any other politician. And if Palin is vetted by the NE or even the MSM, why hasn't Obama been vetted. Instead his history seems to be hidden by the ultra-liberal MSM because they are so anxious for him to win.
  • lurxst
McCain wants to usher in a truly brave new mavericky era of the presidency, where important decisions are made on the fly, like a student cramming to get their final assignment done on time. An era when the truth about our leaders can only be backed up by reference to the Enquirer. (I can't wait to see how the footnotes are cited). A bold time when politicians think they can go in and erase references to themselves on the internets, because, if I erase it here, its truly gone right?

Sorry McCain, I want change, not a random change.
  • edieb
Of the many "sordid" secrets in Palin's past, her husband's DUI ~20 years ago happened about the same time that Obama was using crack, right? And if you checked a source other than the MSM, you might learn that she didn't have a hand in having that "policeman" fired--one of her staff took it on himself and was suspended for it. By the way, the policeman had threatened her (and her sister's) father and tasered his stepson, and he didn't do the divorcing--his wife (Palin's sister) did. As a former journalist, I wouldn't believe a thing that the MSM reports. I think the fact that Palin kept her pregnancy going after learning that she was carrying a Down's Syndrome baby, and her daughter decided to keep her baby and marry her 18-year-old boyfriend is what bothers the pro-choice liberals. That might make her more acceptable to the majority of Christians who are pro-life.
  • The Enquirer may well dig something up, though the bloggers are doing a pretty good job of it so far. But I don't want to focus now on all the family stuff. The entire GOP, right up to and including the POTUS is breathlessly declaring that she has "Executive Experience"! Why, as Sen. McCain pointed out, she first ran for elected office in 1992! (City council of Wasilla, pop. 5,000). Of course as we all know, she went on to become Mayor.

I'd like to bring in an expert on what it takes to be Mayor of Wasilla; former Mayor Sarah Palin. "It’s not rocket science,” Palin said, “It’s $6 million and 53 employees.”
  • edieb
If anyone here is really interested in Palin's "executive experience" and not just reduce her to being a former mayor, go to Wikipedia and do a search on her name.

You win today's 'notable-quotable award' from me. Great turn of phrase. Great to see the word chumming

LOL Thanks. I've been trying to force it into a sentence all week.

Well, I agree with StockBoy about the NE.

And I agree with Lurxst about McCain making decisions on the fly. He was panicking when the Dem's convention went off without a hitch and their speeches received glowing reviews. In the meantime, his own convention was clouded by the twin problems of the Bush/Cheney presence combined with a possible repeat of the Katrina scenario along the gulf coast.

Palin was quite obviously a desperation pick. We got into the Iraq War without considering the consequences and now are stuck there, spending 12 billion a month until 2010.

Do we really want another executive who is so careless about major decisions?????

His mantra is "country first"--- but his VP pick is more like a McCain victory first because it panders to the conservative Christian camp and to disaffected females, who are still angry about Hillary's trreatment by her party.
  • Ricorun
edieb, apparently you aren't aware that on the morning McCain was to announce his pick, someone substantially changed Palin's entry on Wikipedia to make it more positive.
  • AustinRoth
The National Enquirer IS MSM, and has been for some time. They left the Weekly World News arena a long time ago, and have been breaking major stories over and over again for many years.

I don't know if that is more of an indictment of the MSM or the populace, or both, but it is the reality of it.
  • And if Palin is vetted by the NE or even the MSM, why hasn't Obama been vetted.

Why don't you go read the Wikipedia entry on the 2008 Democratic Primary.
  • Yep, someone pseudo-named "Young Trigg" cleaned up Sarah Palin's biography before the annoucement that she would be McCain's VP pick. "Young Trigg" confesses (s)he is a volunteer for McCain.

Excuse me CreamDreams! You conveniently leave out her Govenorship, of the largest state in the Union, 11 billion+ a year budget. Since you are so eager to bring in an expert, first, if I was you Id hire an expert to check your brain, but then that might be like trying to find a B-B in a boxcar. Hey doofus, get all your facts together before you come up with another half-backed grossly uninformed-biased comment like yours. If ignorance is bliss certainly you are in paradise!

    From CBS News' John Bentley:

(ST. PAUL, MINN.) – John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.
  • Uh, no Gilbertdean, I have previously commented on her 1.5 years of experience as governor of a state with 1/8 the population of Obama's home town. No dice. I wouldn't hire such a greenhorn to run a department in my company, let alone the whole thing. You think 1.5 years is enough for the biggest job in the country? Sheesh.

P.S. Ad hominem attacks don't work here. Knock it off.

Is it best for the US to have two self-proclaimed "mavericks" - one older with much experience, one younger with little to none - leading in an increasingly unpredictable world? Think about it, folks.
  • bluewhale
Anyone can define himself on Wikipedia, Editor "YoungTrigg" has done a good job on Palin´s Wiki Profile the night before Ms. Palin was introduced as Mc Cain´s VP.

GreenDreams, You think several years as a South Chicago community activist/organizer stacks up against someone like Palin, with the executive experience she has? Can you tell us just what Obama has accomplished, other than winning his election to US Senate. Tell me three things he has truly accomplished that would be equivalent to Palin's. And GreenDreams, Im guessing you would have no problem hiring Obama to work for you. Given that assumption on my part.,what qualifications do you see in Obama that would make you want to hire him for your Co. Fast talking salesman? that might work. Come on! Barack Obama is where he is because he is black, he is an eloquent speaker(when in front of a teleprompter) and the Dems had a belly full of the Clintons and didnt have the guts to turn away from a black man, that they all knew and know in their heart of hearts, wasnt nowhere near qualified to be Pres. Now I acknowledge a similar argument can be proffered about Palin, but when you stack them against each other Obama just doesnt have the resume or overall professional life and experiences. as Palin So can you give me another reason why you'd vote for Obama even if he was a no-count mule. And what kind of Co. do you run/own ;that you wouldnt hire someone like Palin for a position with same? Im guessing given your moniker, "GreenDreams" an environmental Co. Maybe? Sorry you seem to be so disgruntled. Let me leave you with this little hint. After Palin's speech. Your disgruntlfication is gonna get worse. So better get used to it !! I refer you to this brief YouTube Video

I think the speech that Sarah Palin gave was very good, she read her speech quite well. She e xplained, who she is and her accomplishments, and introduced us to her family. That was the best part of her speech, but from there it was nothing but devisiveness.

Barack Obama has spent the past 18 or 19 months promoting unity and togetherness, and here she comes with nothing but division. The Republican Party is all about division, the Rich and the Poor!!...No Middle Class!!

A "Maverick" which everyone want to call Palin and McCain, is NOT such a good thing! A "Maverick" is a unbranded, unharnessed, animal, running freely, doing damage wherever they roam! They have no home and have no allegiance to anyone, sometimes, not even to themselves! A "Maverick" also makes quick, jerky, moves, most of the time without considering the ramifications of those moves, as McCain has exhibited with his "knee jerk" decison choosing Palin as his running mate, done only with the intent to try and overshadow the Outstanding conclusion of the Democratic Convention.

Just imagine "two" Mavericks, who always want to be the "leader" and who find it difficult to follow, in a position of such enormous power!!! Geez!!

We say that Church and State should be separated, but if you allow Ms. Palin and McCain to get into office, you will be judged by Ms. Palin's religious beliefs, not even your own!!........God forbid!!!
Remember, just because McCain added Palin to his ticket, his issues remain the same, and he is grossly against Women's Rights, i.e., Equal Pay for Equal Work, to name one!
There is REALLY NO Change!!...He's Just added a Woman!!
  • Gilbertdean
    Ms. Justicia,

Quite a few accusations there regarding McCain and Palin. Can you give us specific examples of McCain being against womens rights? and how about some specifics regarding your charge that the Republicans dont believe in a middle class. Have you looked at the Bush taxes cuts and how they cut across all economic/income levels? The high gas prices and recent current sluggish ecomony notwithstanding, just how have the Republicans directly affected your life that has caused you any economic pain. Do you believe your taxes are too low?
Do you actually believe that Bush is responsible for high gas and food prices? Dont you think the Dem controlled Congress should bare a share of the blame for
your percieved class divisions rich vs poor? and finally just how is McCain against equal pay for equal work? Tell us a specific example. Im sure if you want Govt. to control more and more of your life then Im sure you will find some explanation that makes sense to you. Id like to hear it. And as to your defining the exact meaning of a Maverick, and attaching it to McCain; surely you understand the term is a metaphor for someone who is independent in their thoughts and actions. Just as the Democrat Partys' icon is the Donkey, and with Sen. Obama being the current head of such Party, and taking a look at actual definitions for the word Donkey, Im sure you would concur that could also mean Obama is the "head" Democrat..... Ass(?)

Oh, and please give a specific example of Sarah Palin's religious beliefs and how she has imposed them on anyone or even proposed having you or anyone else suffer her beliefs. And Obama? 20 years a member in what any reasonable person would say, was a Church noted for a pastor, close to Obama, claiming "God-D$#&* America. Claiming that the Govt. gave AIDS to the Black man and on and on, you know the drill. Shouldnt Sen. Obama who refused to distance himself from such a hate-filled person, until it became
absolutely imperative for his political survival give you pause and concern as to just what Mr.Obama's true beliefs are and how those beliefs might manifest themselves once he is in the Oval Office? If you are concerned about Ms.Palin's surely you want to consider and be concerned about Mr. Obama's........

    Dont you?
