A Day in the Nonsense of Cindy McCain

Poor Cindy McCain. It must be so hard to be a wealthy heiress:

Democrats’ attacks on her family’s wealth are unfair and offensive, Cindy McCain said today… on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

For nearly two weeks, Democrats have repeatedly hit Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for saying he is unaware of how many houses he owns, calling the presumptive Republican presidential nominee out of touch with everyday Americans. In his acceptance speech at the Democratic convention on Thursday, Democratic nominee Barack Obama turned up the heat on McCain, saying he “doesn’t know” about the lives of middle-class Americans.

“I’m offended by Barack Obama saying that about my husband,” said McCain’s wife Cindy. When asked if Obama went too far in his criticism of McCain, Cindy responded, “I do. I do. I really do.”

What nonsense. Obama is right to go after McCain for not being able to say how many houses he owns. We all know that McCain is out of touch with reality, but now we also know that he’s out of touch with the reality of his own life.

It may very well be that Cindy’s father, James Hensley, worked hard for his wealth. But what exactly did Cindy do, other than be born, to acquire that wealth?

And what exactly did John McCain do, other than marry into a wealthy family after ditching his first wife, to find himself in a position where he doesn’t even know how many houses he owns?

Cindy’s argument is the one Romney made a few days ago, and it’s simply ridiculous.

It is the Obamas, Barack and Michelle alike, who have worked hard all their lives to pull themselves up to where they are now (which is still far below the McCains). There is no denying that John, if not Cindy, has been through difficulty in his life, to put it mildly, but there is no excuse for being so blatantly out of touch, not least when you’re running for the presidency.

Obama’s criticism is hardly unfair, and Cindy’s pity play, the whining of the wealthy, is simply ridiculous, evidence of a character corrupted by a massive inheritance and a life lived in many houses and on many easy streets.

But that wasn’t the only example of such dimwittery on display.

In response to Stephanopoulos’s point that Sarah Palin “has no national security experience,” she said this:

You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.

So… what she’s done as mayor of Wasilla? And in two years as governor?

As governor of the state closest to Russia?! That’s her experience? That’s her qualification?

Seriously, how do you respond to such dimwittery? It’s such an amazingly stupid point. (Our next-door neighbors are Korean. I suppose this makes me an expert on all things Korean? Perhaps I should talk to the prime minister about sending me as Canadian ambassador to Seoul.)

“The mind reels,” as Benen puts it.

Lisa from Green Acres comes to mind - harmless and charming in her own way, but a little disconnected from regular earthlings.

"You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia."

I would count it as experience if she negotiated peace treaties or made national security decisions with regards to Russia. Otherwise it's like anyone who lives near a hospital saying, "I live near a hospital so that gives me experience with treating sick people."

I only hope the American voters sit down and think about Cindy's statements and those sorts of arguments. Many people will hear, "Her state borders Russia so she has extensive dealings with them." Perhaps she does have extensive dealings with them and that's why we do not see hordes of illegal Russian immigrants coming through Alaska- she's been able to successfully close off those borders. And let's not forget that we don't see lots of illegal Canadian immigrants coming into the US through Alaska... she MUST be good. :) (Snark, snark, snark.)
  • Well said, Michael. The whole popularity contest vision of a presidential election is pathetic, but not nearly as pathetic as the GOP now trying to paint Palin as having substantial experience. In fact, she should be setting the record straight herself, because this fails the "Hee Haw" test*. She should quickly point out that the "border" with Russia is not something she or anyone has to police or defend, nor the border with Canada. And that she has not negotiated treaties with Russia nor brokered deals with them.

And no. there are no treaties between the country of Russia and the state of Alaska. We bought Alaska from Russia in 1867 and there is no tension on "the border" which (for those hazy on geography) happens to be a freezing and dangerous ocean crossing, not something you tunnel under or slip across in a Jeep at night.

    * the term was used by former FDA Commissioner David Kessler when the agency argued in court that it was safe to eat ginseng but not to put it in a teabag. They were laughed out of court and Kessler told his staff never, never to go to court again with something that fails the "Hee Haw test".

GreenDreams, my sentiments exactly. My comments about Palin having Russian dealings were pure sarcasm. I only hope the voters sit down and think about what Cindy McCain is saying about Palin and understanding that just because Russia is close to Alaska does not give Palin any experience when it comes to international relations.
  • Republicans are making Jon Stewart increasingly irrelevant.

    Dear Cindy: Oh, boo hoo!

Maybe Cindy has greater knowledge of Russian affairs because of that beautiful Russian sable coat she wears.

I can't help but keep looking at the $300,000 outfit Cindy McCain wore on Sept 1st. Honestly, I think she looks beautiful, It makes me feel jealous that I don't have $300,000. I can't believe any person on this continent would feel ok about wearing an outfit for one day that would cost that kind of money. I can't help but wonder if she understands or even has an awareness of what $300,000 can do for mostly any one in this country. I certainly know that $300,000 can go a long way for many people, including me. Like many americans today, I too am late to pay bills, late on my mortgage, and pray everyday for money to get out of debt. So, for me, what would I do with 300,000 dollars, I would pay off my mortage, my credit card bills, my car, buy hearing aids, eyeglasses, get dental work and probably be able to sleep a bit better at night without so much worry. Clothing although badly needed would probably be last on my list. This is why the McCains in my opinion are just way over the top for the rest of the world. I don't have faith that they could really have sympathy for the working class or the poor. As leaders they can't possibly understand what the needs of the general population would be. 300,000 dollars is an astronomical amount of money! Did buying that outfit even cause a blink of an eye for her to pay? I can't help but wonder, who was she trying to impress? Does she realize that she and her husband are looking for votes from millions of people who won't make that kind of money working for years and years and years? The Cindy McCain outfit has sparked a lot of thinking for me about the kind of money that is out there for some while others suffer everyday of their lives with no food and shelter. It makes me feel that this country has bigger problems that we care to admit or even understand. How can anyone come out and feel proud to publicly say I can afford a $300,000 outfit for one day and I don't know how many homes I own and not think it would cause concern? Do they know how many homeless people we have in this country which they are trying to run? Do they know, in this country which they want to care for has children who are hungry, cold and HOMELESS. My wish for the McCains is that they learn from this experience to become more compassionate with what they have been blessed with, Mrs McCain would have looked lovely in anything she wore. How much more beautiful she would have appeared if she came on stage with a child or family she helped from the streets of homelessness, a child born here in her own country. How wonderful she and her husband would have looked to say I almost bought an outfit that would have cost me $300,000 but decided to donate the money to a worthy cause instead. To Mrs McCain I would say, when you wear a $300,000 outfit to an affair that is looking for votes from the poor and the working class the message is pure mockery when you know I am poor and have to work hard for a living. I ask you, would you truley vote for me, if you were in my $3.00 flip flops and I were in your $300,000 SHOES?
