Dutch Spies Quit Iran Due to ‘Imminent U.S. Attack’: From De Telegraaf of The Netherlands

According to Friday Morning’s Edition Of The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the Dutch intelligence service has halted a very successful operation to ’sabotage’ Iran’s weapons program due to an imminent American attack that would have put its activities and personnel at risk.

Joost de Haas and Bart Mos of De Telegraaf report in part:

“The Dutch Intelligence Service AIVD [Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst or General Intelligence and Security Service ] has in recent years been running a top secret operation inside Iran with the aim of infiltrating and sabotaging the weapons industry of the Islamic republic.

The operation, described as being extremely successful, was recently discontinued in connection of plans for an imminent U.S. air strike on Iran. Well-informed sources have told De Telegraaf, some of the targets of the strike are directly linked to the Dutch espionage operation.”

Well, if you're going to do it, I suppose going during the middle of a hurricane smashing into NOLA might…

All snark aside, while I hope this story proves to be inaccurate and the Dutch are reacting to bad intelligence or rumors, I suppose I wouldn't be that shocked. Of course, doing it right after we just severely ticked of the Russians might make it a poor decision. And, of course, were such a think to happen right around the GOP convention and only a handful of weeks before the election, it would open up many more cans of worms in terms of questions.

I don't know if the US would actually bomb Iranian nuclear sites at the moment or not (whether we use unmanned drones or not). But I think the US is working with Israel for the Israelis to bomb Iranian nuclear sites. This makes more sense to me and could explain why the CIA is warning their allies of an imminent strike. After all our allies only knows that the US is issuing the warning for them to get out because of an imminent strike.

But even if it is Israel (or some other country) who launches the actual strike, I still think the US is ultimately behind the attack. After all this is something that Bush/Cheney have been pushing, their “diplomatic talk” just being cover that they've learned is necessary after Iraq. Bush has gotten a lot of flack lately for finally talking to our enemies, as Obama has wanted. A military strike would allow the Bush/Cheney people to say that they “tried” to talk with the Iranians and that failed. That would make a lot of people in the Bush camp happy- to be able to say that Obama's willingness to meet with “our enemies” is naive and does not work.

Call me cynical but we are talking about Bush/Cheney here who have led us into war before under false pretenses and who have divided America against itself so they can gain political points….

Personally I hope the article is wrong and that I'm wrong in this.

It will never be a good decision, and I'm surprised that anyone here seriously thinks it could be. Several of the key facilities are in Tehran and at least one is right under a major university. If Israel bombs a university in a major population center, or if we do, we will rightly deserve the condemnation of the entire world.

Aside from the horrible human costs, we could be looking at a crippling increase in the price of oil.

Chris, “Aside from the horrible human costs, we could be looking at a crippling increase in the price of oil.”

Agreed, but what's a few dead students and the crippling price of oil to a few whiney Americans when it comes to winning an election for the Republicans? (Sarcasm intended.)
