Class Amidst the Storm

This is turning into a down and dirty fight to the finish for the White House, but each side may still show their moments of grace. Perhaps John McCain read Tony Campell’s post earlier. Perhaps he just outflanked the worries of our Editor, Joe Gandelman. No matter what the cause, McCain is indeed releasing a new ad on the evening that Barack Obama accepts the nomination of his party to be the next president.

JOHN MCCAIN: Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America.

Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations.

How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we’ll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done.

I’m John McCain and I approve this message.

  • Awwww...

Almost makes you forget that he accused Obama of treason.

    Good job being black, Senator!

(And we wouldn't be in this recession if it wasn't for all the lost productivity from recognizing the MLK holiday.)
  • Very classy ad.

And sadly a typical reaction on the hard lefty blogs.

    Patrick,
It's hard not to be cynical given the McCain campaign up to now. Of course the ad itself is classy. But it looks like a good cop-bad cop approach.
  • and would the same hold true of the Obama campaign ?

If they do something nice next week that is

I'm an Obama supporter ... but I think the ad is classy. (It's also pretty shrewd.) And I'd much prefer that both candidates attempt to win by showing their better selves.
  • Sorry Jazz
As you know I supported John McCain in 2000 but I have to be cynical here since St John sold his soul to the devil, Karl Rove, in order to get elected. This was nothing but politics. The Rovian John McCain is a phony and anyone who falls for it is a fool.

"Tomorrow, we’ll be back at it..."

We'll see tomorrow if that means: "Tomorrow we'll point to this ad while whining emphatically about anything mean you may say about me tonight."

I have to agree with Mr. Beasley, I miss the McCain of 2000. I have to wonder who the real McCoy is, the McCain from 2000 or the one we see today?
  • And sadly a typical reaction on the hard lefty blogs.

Oh spare me. McCain just wants some good press after weeks of being called out for spreading blatant smears.
  • kritt11
I thought it was classy. There will be enough to be cynical about later on.
  • AustinRoth
What recession? Those damn inconvenient facts (like the GDP growing 3.3% last quarter) keep getting in the way.

And talk about a (lack) of class. Now McCain saying NICE things is being attacked as negative and racist campaigning. I swear, the Left is so full of sh!t.
  • pacatrue
Very shrewd move from McCain. He gets to grab a share of attention on Obama's night and it can't help but be positive.
