DNC Quick Thoughts

I’ve been away on business for the last few days so it was hard to post anything about the Democratic National Convention. However, I have been watching some of the main speeches and wanted to share my thoughts:

  • It was good to see Ted Kennedy on Monday night. The old, liberal lion looked frail, as can be expected from what he has gone through, but his spirit was strong.
  • Michelle Obama had a good speech, even though it had a lot of cliches in it. It was interesting that she talked about the “world as it should be” as opposed to the world as it is. It was an interesting lesson in the differences between how conservatives view the world and how liberals view the world. Both have their pluses and minuses.
  • The Obama children trying to talking to their Daddy was nice. Yes, I know that having the wife and kids speak is just show and not important to the task of governing, but having the youngest Obama keep saying “Hi, Daddy!” when she saw her father on the screen, was a bit of heaven. Thank God for unscripted moments.
  • Hillary and Bill gave speeches that summed up what the Dems were for, which was good in defining the race. Bill Clinton was able to link himself to Obama with the line about how the GOP tagged him as young and inexperienced in 1992. That’s a smart strategy and the Obama campaign would be wise to use it.
  • I missed Biden’s speech. Next up is Obama and we will see him give the speech of his life tonight.
