George,

If someone is claiming to be a fiscally conservative Repubican, they would automatically vote for McCain because it would split the federal government and limit spending.

There is no way that someone can claim to be a fiscal conservative and then way that the best way to control spending is to give control of all parts of the government to the Democratic Party.

The idea that a government can raise taxes enough to balance the budget is laughable. The Democrats will just raise spending and create new entitlement programs. Look at the FY2009 budget shortfalls in solidly Democratic states like Mass, MD, NY, and California. Having Democrats in charge and having high taxes does not balance a budget anymore than having big government Republicans in charge.

And George, that is why the U.S. will soon be a one party state. The U.S. only needs one big governmetn party. Karl Rove convinced the Republicans that they could be the second big government party as long as the used niche campaigns and pandered to social conservatives.

The next question should be is how can a one party state ever hope to be fiscally conservative. the best fiscal decisiosn were made with a Republican congress matched with a Democratic President. However, if you look back the previous times, all that happens during Democratic control is the rachet effect coupled with inflation to raise people into higher tax brackets.

Your right george.

Also if you look at the numbers the budget deficit increased by 2 trillion dollars under Clinton as well. TWO trillion.

It increased under Jimmy Carter as well. LBJ. Since 1960 the Budget has been a candy store.

ITS TIME TO STOP THIS MADNESS.

You should at least have them explain their answer as to how they match their goals. If controlling government spending is important, then how does having a Democratic President that will sign Democratic program bills gong to cut spending or balance the budget.

If he really supports his goals, he would support McCain if for no other reason that it will balance the large Democratic majorities in Congress.

Also, he lost all credibility in discussing third parties. He lives in an area that does not have a functional repubican party. Does he really believe that a third and fourth party will be able to find candidates for all offices when the Republicans cannot even manage to do it.

"Any interview should have called him on it and ask him to explain where any state and is totally controlled by the Democrats is a small government state."

Problematic. When you make the choice to schedule an interview with someone because they are of interest, you take on a responsibility to ask them questions that will get the information you are looking for, but to also allow them to speak and give their own answers, not instruct them on what you think the correct answers should be. For what it's worth, Cindy is a "real" Republican, and pretty much had to be restrained with a straightjacket and ball gag during parts of this. The closest she came was her first follow-up (which was not part of the original set of questions for this piece) but we discussed afterward how much restraint she showed.

You don't invite somebody to an interview only ask them questions and then scold them about their answers. That's not an interview. It's a debate, and he was not invited to a debate. He was asked there to tell us about his organization and explain how he wound up being an Obama supporter as a Republican. His reasons are his own and he put them out there for us.

If you listen to the replay, though, in the second half of his appearance, after we finished the set questions, we did wander around a bit and try to clarify why he thought some of those things. That's mostly because I agree that the concept of a Democratic controlled White House and Congress resulting in reductions in size of government and spending is pretty mind boggling to say the least.

If any Repubican really cared about fiscal responsbility, they would definitely vote for McCain. The reason being is that it would split the government between the two parties and thus no new programs would be started.

However, the idea that small government will result with the Democrats in charge of all parts of the government is naive and laughable. Any interview should have called him on it and ask him to explain where any state and is totally controlled by the Democrats is a small government state.

Its always interesting how Democrats who are angry sound like Republicans when they are complaining.

Republicans sound like Democrats when they are complaining. Yet here you have someone who says they are basically angry about big government and fiscal irresponsibility and yet they are going to vote for Obama.

Doesnt make much sense to me. Both candidates are Morons. They are missing the picture here. We cannot afford anything anymore. We are on the verge of being bankrupt as a country and yet here they all go promising us the moon and BY GOD they will find a way to borrow enough money to make it to the next Fricking convention and then tell us how sorry the other party is.

Arent you all tired of this by now??

The lies. The deceipt. The slight of hand??

Whats next? If Im elected Ill cut taxes, Balance the Budget, raise military spending by a trillion dollars, Fully fund all our schools, Shore up Medicare, Build a billion windmills, drill for oil, HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYONE........WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

By the way, I listened to this interview. I thought it was well conducted.

Why, thank you, George! High praise indeed, coming from you. ;-)

By the way, I listened to this interview. I thought it was well conducted.

I think he is mainly unhappy with the Republican Party for their fiscal irresponsibility. Early in the interview, he complained about the creation of the Medicare drug benefit. Very shortly after, he complained about tax cuts being irresponsible. I know some moderate Republicans who feel the same way--who feel President Bush is sticking someone else with the bills he has run up.

"I feel first and foremost that I want responsible government and, where appropriate, small government. Our party, when it had control of the White House and Congress, they went ahead and, for example, passed the largest social welfare program since Lyndon Johnson – the Medicare Part D program. That is a huge flashpoint for many people in our organization."

Obama promises to spend much more than the Republicans, and make government much larger, and he prefers Obama?

"I think the most important thing is that we need to have a balanced budget. We need to have a government that is taking in about as much as it spends, so more so than even the size of government, and continuing to pass on our burden to our children. Our party is into passing very irresponsible tax cuts. Now I, being a Republican, I love tax cuts. But you can’t always be cutting taxes if you can’t afford to reduce the size of government services"

Why can't you reduce spending?
