Comparing Biden's relationship with Obama to Lincoln's with Seward, Chase and Bates is a little over the top, don't you think? Seward, in particular, thought Lincoln was a flake. That attitude changed, but it took a while. I don't think Biden and Obama have ever been that adversarial. Heck, Biden was never as hard on Obama as GHW Bush was on Reagan. In fact, I saw Bill Richardson talking about the pair earlier today. He said he could see their mutual respect growing as the primaries progressed. And Biden certainly isn't going to be training his considerable rhetorical guns on Obama. But it's clear even today that he has no qualms about putting McCain in his sites.

Thanks for sharing the book excerpts Joe and for presenting this perspective. There is a certain contingent who have already decided to play this VP choice as demonstrating a lack of confidence on the part of Obama. Goodwin's writing suggest's that just the opposite may be as likely. I think Obama is being sold short regarding his judgement on the VP pick, but if that underestimation is part of a trend, then it's one that will work to his favor.<br><br>"But he was able to put those past rivalries beside him, knowing that if these guys do a good job, then it will only be down to the interests of the country and obviously to his own interest as well." - Doris Goodwin
