The reason I'm not buying into the mudfest is because this was _supposed_ to be the year of "clean campaigns." Both candidates promised it. Both candidates haven't delivered on that promise.

On a side note, I should switch to my real name here. Update: Done!

I'd like to see the candidates address broad and even stretchy as well as pertinent issues. Maybe the debates will be worthwhile this year or the two candidates will start discussing serious items.

* I want more specifics on their energy policy.

* What does each side say precisely on the notion of a bailout of Detroit?

* If we want our troops out of Iraq but need a US presence in the Middle East to stop future trouble, why don't we commit more forces to next-door Kuwait? (Unless it is successfully argued that pre-positioning of materiel is sufficient and is better, less controversial regionally, than stationing large numbers of military personnel.)

* Inflation is a concern, but deflation cannot be ignored, especially if the federal government intervenes too harshly against inflation or demand simply subsides because people are out of jobs or homes. What do the candidates have to say?

http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/wp/2003/wp0...

http://www.oecd.org/document/12/0,3343,en_2649_...

www.international-economy.com/TIE_W06_Posen.pdf

http://www.federalreserve.gov/pubs/ifdp/2002/72...

"...
