John McCain Doesn’t Know How Many Homes He Owns

Republican Presidential nominee-to-be Sen. John McCain has just made a gaffe that will test whether Democratic Party strategists are ready to contest the election or whether they will (a) be negative role models for future college political science students and/or (b) should be sued for negligence.

Some of us can’t tell you know many pairs of socks we have, but McCain doesn’t know how many houses he has, according to The Politico:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said in an interview Wednesday that he was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.

“I think — I’ll have my staff get to you,” McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. “It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.”

The correct answer is at least four, located in Arizona, California and Virginia, according to his staff. Newsweek estimated this summer that the couple owns at least seven properties.

This is the kind of gaffe that Republicans would be all over — using it in ads, derisively raising it and mocking it on talk radio shows, plastering all over the cable political shows, using it as part of the talking points, putting it print ads and even raising it in passing during a political debate. The reason: in these economic times it’s incomprehensible that someone doesn’t know how many homes they own — or can’t give a rough figure when asked about it.

And then there is the context.

McCain supposedly broke with his close friend and adviser Phil Gramm after Gramm — who himself has no problem worrying about his health care, his car (or limo) payments, losing his home or paying his grocery bill — asserted that the U.S. is a country merely in a “mental recession” comprised of a bunch of “whiners.” But Gramm was recently at McCain’s side and there have been some reports now with sources speculating he could have a post in a McCain administration ….perhaps Secretary of the Treasury.

[SEE TWO UPDATES BELOW]

The big issue for the Democrats is whether they are in the same fighting mode as the Republicans. Efforts are still underway by the GOP to find and get negative information about Obama’s college days into the mainstream media — and the media is in pursuit. Which is it’s job: to see who really lurks behind the carefully constructed campaign facade.

McCain’s gaffe — coupled with continuing signs that he could have an adviser or cabinet secretary in the administration who pooh-poohs America’s financial condition and who seemingly thinks Americans are spineless complainers due to the the financial horror story many now face every day — raises the same issue. Will the Democrats use it or respond with a perfunctory and fleeting reply for one news cycle?

Are the Democrats going to play the football game on the official field where the game is played by traditional rules and where the game is actually decided? Or are they going to continue to decide to play the game seemingly alone on an unofficial field by rules they set using themselves…rules by which the judges won’t definitely decide the game?

Inquiring political junkies’ minds want to know:

Is Obama going to fight the election the Chicago Way? Or the Transcendental Meditation Way?

UPDATE 1: Hotline On Call has this:

So what’s worse? Obama’s affection for arugula, or McCain’s inability to remember how many properties he owns?

The GOPer’s team knows that, particularly given the role the economy is playing in the contest, the episode could be damaging. Here’s McCain spokesman Brian Rogers’ push back:

“Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans? The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.”

The problem for the GOP: not knowing how many houses you have is a terrible mental IMAGE and one that will stick in the minds of voters. Those upset by Obama’s “clinging to guns” are political outraged. Those impacted by him not remembering the number of houses he has are stunned.

UPDATE II: Obama has used the gaffe in a new ad:

HERE’S A CROSS-SECTION OF REACTION TO THIS STORY:

Marc Ambinder (a reliable reporter as well as an excellent blogger and writer):

The Obama campaign wants voters to get this message: “How can a guy who doesn’t know how many houses he owns, or what it means to be rich possibly feel your pain?”

The Obama campaign is officially sanctioning an attack on John McCain’s wealth and lifestyle — the first time they’ve been willing to go there.

The proximate cause is McCain’s fumbling answer to Politico about the number of houses he owns. (”. “I think — I’ll have my staff get to you”)

Matthew Yglesias:

Amenities aside, though, this is one reason why it’s a bit unfair to tag McCain as out of touch for being unable to remember how many homes he owns. When one of your homes is really a combination of two different luxury condos the metaphysical status of your property comes into question. You’d really need to ask a trained professional mereologist to resolve the issue and can’t expect McCain to speak to it personally.

Obsidian Wings’ Hilzoy:

Just the other day I asked myself: self, how many pens do you have? And honestly, I just couldn’t remember. Did I or did I not put a ballpoint from the Karachi Sheraton in my briefcase by mistake? And what about the one that sort of exploded the other day while I was checking my phone messages: did I actually throw it away? And the one I bought in a moment of folly back in the 80s, the one with the sparkly green ink that has completely dried up because I never actually used it: is it still lurking somewhere in my office?

Honestly: it can be hard to keep track of these things. So I say: cut John McCain a break.

Hot Air’s Allahpundit:

It’ll help Obama marginally — the appeal of class warfare is evergreen, especially in a bad economy — but it’d help a lot more if McCain actually looked the part Obama’s trying to make him play. Americans are used to the idea of politicians being filthy rich; it’s not wealth itself that puts fangs into the attack, it’s how wealth suggests luxury, entitlement, softness, and selfishness. Good luck with that, Barry. …It’s high time for a Rezko ad, just like it was high time for an Ayers ad yesterday.

Due to posting problems at our Utah location, this roundup is more limited than usual.

  • GeorgeSorwell
It looks like McCain owns ten homes.
  • Davebo
Actually George, McCain most likely owns zero homes.

Cindy made him sign a prenup, what are the odds she'd put real estate in his name?

I'd guess that's why he avoided the question, embarrassing.

    Check this out.
  • Barack Obama already has a response ad up: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/never_ad/

McCain has many houses of cards.
  • jchem
oops! Sounds like McCain forgot to take his medication. His campaign, however, came out with a pretty sharp response:

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said in a statement.

sorry for the repeat...Joe beat me to it.
  • Holly_in_Cincinnati
I don't think this is a gaffe at all and it is probably easily explained. John McCain may own one home in his own name. Most homes are probably in his wife's name and and tied up in financial arrangements to which John McCain (as a sitting senator and presidential candidate) probably does not have access. In addition, some are houses, some condos, one a combination of condos and some are probably rental property.

If McCain had given an incorrect answer off the top of his head, now THAT would have been a gaffe.
  • JSpencer
John Cole: "Channeling my inner Jeff Foxworthy: “If you don’t know how many houses you have, you might be elitist.”
  • Mike_P
My wife and I don't separate who owns our (one) house by which name is on the mortgage. Of course when you have at least 7 (and the evidence indicates 10) I can certainly understand a little confusion, what with all the prenups, accountants, lawyers and staff it must take to maintain it all. Oh, the trials of being in John McCain's middle class! (And is it really a defense of McCain to note he got lucky by divorcing his wife so he could marry a wealthy beer heiress?)

I heard Obama eats ARUGULA! And he has a funny name.
  • Maybe this will bring attention to the fact that John "7 Home" McCain's own tax plan would lower his families taxes by nearly $400,000 (He could buy another house with that!). While Obama's plan would actually give a bigger break the 95+% of us who don't make $250,000+ a year.
  • vwcat
the dnc and obama are already making a big deal about this.
Gov. Kaine of Virginia says it's because McCain can't count high enough.
  • I heard Obama eats ARUGULA! And he has a funny name.

When McCain eats a salad, he has $100 bills instead of lettuce.
  • mikkel
I can't believe that McCain inaccurately represents how Social Security is (and always was) funded and no one calls him on it. And on the economic front he suggested that one of the main problems was that the banks had to pay taxes when they moved things to level 3 assets, while the increase in level 3 assets is what is threatening the whole global economy.....and then this makes front page headlines.

And of course Obama supporting the agriculture monstrosity got very little mention but I shouldn't vote for him because he is popular or something.

Of course it'd be "elitist" of me to point out that this is idiotic.
  • DLS
Obama was starting to pick himself up again, anyway -- advocating Change [tm] and improvement to the system of primary elections in this country. Back on target, so to speak. Then here comes McCain to serve Obama something just delicious.
  • DLS
Also, the silly bogus denials of elitism where it actually and obviously exists needn't be continued on here; it achieves nothing positive. McCain's blunder isn't of the same nature as the real elitism we have encountered; McCain's blunder here makes him more than anything else seem out of touch with the public as well as arguably with reality.
  • DLS
Attacking Obama is hardly a way for McCain to recover from this. Besides, the Obama team can just say that at least their candidate knows how to count.
  • jwest
I do love the smell of liberal desperation.
  • jchem
"I do love the smell of liberal desperation."

Liberal desperation?? This is red meat pure and simple served up free of charge from McCain. Part of his whole mantra has been to paint Obama as some sort of elitist (I mean, even in his response, he goes back to arugula). Just imagine if Obama had said something as stupid as this; it would fit right in with what McCain's talking points have been--just as Joe pointed out above.
  • AMW
Obama can't count either. He is the one that said he visited "57 states" during the primaries.

I don't care what McCain said. I don't own a home. I expect him to own several. I would imagine the wife and staff handle the majority of financial transactions in their household and he has no clue what they actually 'own'. My best guess is that since the primary season has started he has only been to the Arizona house and the Washington DC house- otherwise he has been sleeping in hotels and airplanes for two years.

As far as I'm concerned they are both rich elitist. I just happen to like one better than th other.
  • Ricorun
Besides, the Obama team can just say that at least their candidate knows how to count.

Well, there was that "57 state" thing. But anyway, the "Obama is an elitist" charge always struck me to be as dangerous as it was ludicrous. The chickens would eventually come home to roost. I hope Cindy has a nice recipe ready.
  • AMW,
You'd forget where you lived after 2 years? And it's not like he's never been back to any of his homes during this time. Hell, if he just woulda guessed, that would have been better and more understandable.
  • jwest,
And yet it's not a sign of desperation to make fun of the type of lettuce people eat?
  • elrod
This is the scanner incident all over again. George H.W. Bush didn't know what a checkout scanner did and he just looked out of touch.

McCain put himself into the same problem. I don't know why McCain couldn't actually answer the question; the question of Cindy's ownership or prenup agreement is beside the point. The imagery in an age full of home foreclosures is horrible. Did it matter that when John Kerry said he was "before the $85 billion spending bill before he was against it" was a perfectly logical explanation of parliamentary procedure? No, because it confirmed an image already made by his opponents that he was a waffler. McCain's biggest weakness, after Bush's legacy, is his failure to comprehend economics. He's admitted as much. And his top economic adviser said Americans were just whiners. So this statement merely confirms a growing image of McCain as out of touch on an issue that really matters.

Oh, and going after Obama on his $4 million income is even sillier given that McCain declared anything under $5 million middle class.

Also, the Dems are sending out surrogates in 16 states to flog this. They're even sending out my Governor Phil Bredesen (TN), who is quite conservative, to drive this home. Finally, an issue that will rally working class whites.
  • Ricorun
AMW: I would imagine the wife and staff handle the majority of financial transactions in their household and he has no clue what they actually 'own'.

Oh yeah, that's so much better. I'm sure McCain will put that in an ad post haste.
  • Rico,
    Hahahahaha!
  • jwest
This might be the vegetarian version of “red meat”, but it sure seems like grasping at straws to me.

Like they say on the street, “Is that all you got?”

    ****************************************

    Chris,

When you are running for president and don’t know the answer to a question like that, just say you don’t know. Otherwise, when proven wrong, some crazy liberal will accuse you of lying.

Plus, anyone old enough for an AARP card and who has been reasonably successful would need to think about the answer to that question. What is considered a house? Of course, your primary residence and a vacation house, but how about your kid’s house (that has your name on the title, too) or the “carriage house” that’s also on your property, is that separate or considered with the main house? How about the three investment properties you bought with your brother-in-law?

As you can see, you don’t need to be a multi-millionaire to accumulate a number of titles with your name on them and it may take a little definition to determine an accurate answer.
  • This just in. According to his campaign, McCain can't be rich or out of touch, because he's a POW.
  • Plus, anyone old enough for an AARP card and who has been reasonably successful would need to think about the answer to that question.

Vote McCain. He's fabulously wealthy and senile. - "I'm McCain and I approve this message"

As you can see, you don’t need to be a multi-millionaire to accumulate a number of titles with your name on them and it may take a little definition to determine an accurate answer.

I'm sure anyone could give you a solid idea of what homes they actually live in. So he could have said, "I live primarily in 4 homes and have a few other properties in my name."
  • Ricorun
Let's put this in perspective: Giuliani was hammered because he didn't know how much a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread cost. Bush was hammered when he expressed incredulity at the prospect of $4/gal gas. Gramm gets hammered when he claims the nation is a bunch of whiners for fretting about the economy. McCain doesn't know how many houses he owns.

And Obama was hammered because he likes arugula -- which you can grow in a freakin' flower pot on your windowsill. And which, by the way, will join the dandelions in your yard if you're not careful.

Of course, dandelions are also edible. In fact, dandelion leaves taste a lot like arugula. Lol!
  • jwest
I seem to remember another presidential candidate that had a rich wife and numerous homes.

Of course, to my knowledge, he didn’t get them with the help of a convicted felon.
  • This is a tempest in a teapot really. From all I've heard on CNN/MSNBC/etc they own 3 homes as far as places they live (main home in Phoenix, home in DC and a vacation property in Sedona).

The rest of them are investment/rental properties.

Very poorly answered but as others have noted its like the 57 state or the serve for 10 years thing w/Obama, not a big deal.
  • Ricorun
jwest: I seem to remember another presidential candidate that had a rich wife and numerous homes.

And why would you remember that? Perhaps because a bid deal was made of it? As I recall, there was also a question of how many vehicles said candidate owned. My guess is... McCain had better bone up.
  • jwest
I can’t wait for the debates.

After McCain delivers a clean, crisp, cogent answer to a question, the moderator turns to Obama and receives, in his best Saddleback Stumble:

“But……but……..he owns a lot of houses!”

    Great retort, Barack.
  • GeorgeSorwell
A YouTube tour of the McCain properties is available.
  • jwest has retreated into his imagination. Awesome.

And if you got Rezko dirt, show it. But I don't even recall Obama being asked to testify about Rezko, so I'm sure all you have is innuendo.
  • pacatrue
Fascinating. With Iran going for nukes, a lousy economy, climate change, the eventual depletion of fossil fuels, and Supreme Court nominations to make, what really gets people charged up is whether or not one candidate knows how many homes he owns and whether another eats the wrong type of lettuce (by the way, did Obama ever even say he was particularly fond of arugula or was that just made up?). Is politics this stupid in other countries? It probably is, because most all humans are inane. This is why I hate politics. Anyway, I suppose Obama and Dems have to use this since McCain and the Republicans are trying to label Obama as a fancy pants and out of touch, but I'd really rather they both leave it and suitably American dietary habits alone.
  • RememberNovember
only 4 million? That's not rich according to McCainiac.
and the other is just tit-for-tat hearsay. Point of fact all beaches in Hawaii are public- tho some may think that they have a private beach- they just have private access.
  • jwest
    Chris,

The three most important people in Obama’s recent life in Chicago are:

    • A Felon
    • A Domestic Terrorist
    • A Crazy Racist Preacher

That’s quite a lineup. Now, I’ll bet that most of the liberals who post or comment on this site have good friends who fit at least one of these categories.

Some hang around with people who would cover two of these descriptions (Shaun, I’m looking in your direction).

But you’ve got to be a gold-medal winning radical to squeeze all three of these vocations into your life in just a few short years. Barack truly is something special.
  • pacatrue
Yeah, I live in Hawaii. There are no private beaches on Oahu. The only ones that are restricted are military. This issue of keeping beaches public is very important to Hawaiians. So the "private beach in Hawaii" thing is just ignorant slander.
  • pacatrue
To add on, one reason Obama was in Hawaii is because he was visiting his grandmother. Does the McCain campaign want to come out now criticizing Americans for seeing their grandmothers?
  • jwest,
So over the top and comical! I love it!

Please, tell us about McCain's relationship with Charles Keating (a felon), his spiritual adviser John Hagee (a crazy racist Pastor), and President Bush (a war criminal).
  • pacatrue
jwest, don't label people needlessly or anything.
  • RememberNovember
Here's a question for JWest- how many Dems are under indictment/investigation vs. how many Repubs?

let's rule out sex scandals because they're about even over the past twenty or so years. I'm talking more the Randall Cunningham/Ted Stevens/ Whitewater/Marion Barry kind of thing.
  • DLS
"This is the scanner incident all over again. George H.W. Bush didn't know what a checkout scanner did and he just looked out of touch.

McCain put himself into the same problem."

    EXACTLY.
  • jwest
    RememberNovember,

I’m sure the count of felons would be heavily weighted towards the left side of the scale; however, I don’t have the numbers handy to back that up.

The big difference is that when republicans do something wrong, we get rid of them. Democrats seem to re-elect them with higher margins.

    Why is that?
  • jwest
    Chris,

    To answer your question:

Keating – McCain was totally exonerated along with John Glenn. DeConcini, Riegle and Cranston (all democrats, of course) were found to have acted improperly.

Hagee - McCain has apparently met him twice (wasn’t married by him, he didn’t baptize his children and he didn’t write a book with a title ripped from one of his sermons).

Bush - Quickly becoming recognized as one of the greatest American presidents.
  • jchem
    jwest and RememberNovember,

You seriously want to talk scandals with either party? RememberNovember gave us some Repubs; how about some Dems? There's Jefferson from LA and his fridge / Sandy Berger and destroying archives / Chris Dodd and his shady mortgage dealings / Dianne Feinstein and her shady military projects steered toward her husband.

Gee, that was fun. Now where does that get us in this thread?
  • Mike_P
"Bush - Quickly becoming recognized as one of the greatest American presidents."

This thread has now officially drifted off the tracks and into Bedlam's waiting paddy wagon.

You've got to be kidding me!

Russia invades and occupies Georgia and the `media` is busy talking about and speculating on how many homes the candidates have title to!

And they, the media, actually thing this should matter on election day!

Hot AIr's Allahpundit (in Joe's post) said, "Americans are used to the idea of politicians being filthy rich; it’s not wealth itself that puts fangs into the attack, it’s how wealth suggests luxury, entitlement, softness, and selfishness."

Obama can start with the (Keating) scandal, the private plan he (his wife) owns, who McCain's one true job outside the Navy was given to him by his father-in-law, how McCain, how McCain was a legacy student at the Naval Academy (was almoost kicked out and graduated #894 out of a class of 899), how McCain is thundering for congress to get back to work instead of taking vacations, when he (McCain) was in his office and didn't even bother to vote on the energy plan, etc.

Those are just off the top of my head to show McCain's entitlement, selfishness, etc.
