HE FINISHES WITH A RECORD-BREAKING 8 GOLDS, MORE THAN ALL BUT 14 COUNTRIES IN THE MEDAL COUNT. MORE HERE.

  • Just to put this in another perspective. Phelps has won 8 gold medals at this Olympics.

    The United States, China and Germany are the only COUNTRIES to have won as many gold medals so far. You can probably assume a few more like Australia, Korea, England, etc will probably pass him in the next week but the chances are still good that by the end of the games in terms of Gold medals that Phelps might just be in the top ten ALL BY HIMSELF.

    So Phelps is indeed amazing but he needs to go to London in 2012 to break the complete Olympics record. He now has 16 Olympic medals, 14 of them Gold (FOURTEEN GOLD MEDALS, good grief typing it is amazing).

    This makes him the best ever male athlete in terms of total medals and the best overall in terms of total gold medals.

    But as noted above, the all time record is still held by gymnast Larissa Latynina who won a grand total of 18 medals in the 56/60/64 games.

    I've heard rumors Phelps may not go to the 2012 games though
