Good for McCain, who disdains temporizing in the face of a strategic takeover of Europe's oil supply routes and supports projection of American interests. Read Marshall Goldman's Petrostate and also take the interests of the Ukraine into account----the country whose president was poisoned [unsuccessfully in this instance] by the successor to Stalin, who also loved to poison his opponents.

Read Simon Montefiori's two masterpieces, Stalin: In the Court of the Red Tsar and Young StaIin, and the similarities between Putin and Stalin will strike you no matter how willing you are to cut Vlad The Empoisoner some slack.

Many in America have made fun of Russia for getting all upset when states bordering Russia flirt with NATO or discuss holding missile defense bases with the US. We make fun of them because Russia seems to think the Cold War is still ongoing and that America or NATO is moving in. How can they so live in the past and interpret everything through the lens of the Cold War? And yet as soon as Russia takes an aggressive step towards a neighbor, we don't see it as something new, a fight between Russia and a neighbor, but instead declare this as Russia trying to rebuild a Soviet empire, restart the Cold War, and there was even a cartoon on TMV suggesting Stalinism had returned. We are essentially viewing the situation through the lens of the Cold War -- the same thing we condemn Russia for doing.

What's with this funky new comment system where you have to leave your name, e-mail and website?

Anyway on to the post...

All I can say is, "Oh, My God." McCain has got to be joking. This is the first major international crises since the Cold War? I know he was a POW for five years many years ago. Perhaps he's been secretly in prison the past couple of decades and missed everything that's happened.

ANdrew Sullivan has it right... if Obama had made this comment the press would be all over him (and they have been for far less).

The media needs to wake up and do its job in reporting these preposterous claims.

The situation with Georgia and Russia is serious enough without McCain rushing in and getting all hyperbolic - which someone needs to explain to him is not a substitute for cool, reasoned, judgement. Frankly the guy is making me nervous.
