"Don't people oppose abortion because they think it's murder? How can you stomach someone you think supports murder, but not someone who supports two guys or two gals having the same tax benefits as a straight couple?"

Chris, your comment is on the right track, and I love it- thanks! You're so right that any reasonable person would think abortion and murderers are worse than gay marriage. But the fight for gay rights just isn't about the fight to marry. Fundamentally the fight for gay rights is about the right for gays and lesbians to exist without fear, which just makes your point that much more accurate (and poignant).

It's one thing for these anti-gay bigots to be against gay marriage, I can understand how some people may feel threatened by gay marriage. But it's another thing entirely for these anti-gay bigots to be against basic human respect toward fellow humans (and these bigots are against basic rights for gays and lesbians). These same bigots who claim to support family values will throw their own kids on the streets if they find out they are gay or lesbian. It happens everyday. If these people are willing to treat their own kids like trash, think of how these people must treat other gays and lesbians. As adults, gays and lesbians are discriminated against in employment, housing and even murdered. And people are murdered even if they are perceived to be gay or lesbian.

McCain doesn't need to pander to pro-lifers because they're already in the bag for the Republican Party.

So much so that a modest pander to pro-choicers is okay.

But he has to tow the line on gay rights.

Chris: I have to agree with you that the pro-life position ought to be a more important one for values voters. On the other hand though, I didn't interpret McCain's comment as saying that one issue ought to take precedence (or to be more of a litmus test) than the other; I heard it as saying that people might agree to disagree on a single issue but not accept a candidate who disagreed fundamentally on several issues.

That's funny, considering Cindy's limp-wristed ( ok that's a sterotype at gay but I couldn't help it it's topical)
