"Here's a radical idea for Public Servants: If they can afford to raise hundreds of millions- don't pay them a salary"

Reform of their pensions and other retirement benefits (including health care) will be made eventually, in the decades to come. Such things should be limited, not lavish, and reform will be demanded as a matter of principle as well as reducing mammoth future government liabilities.

Perhaps the only way to limit fund-raising is to find some way to limit the length of the campaign. The Presidential campaigns now are about a 2 year affair. This is of public interest for many reasons, not least of which is that it's true even for incumbent Presidents. They lose half of their term to campaigning. Can there be a law, or just agreement, to run all primaries within, say 5 months of November?

Here's a radical idea for Public Servants: If they can afford to raise hundreds of millions- don't pay them a salary. When Steve Jobs rejoined Apple, he took a $1 salary. Granted he also had some awesome perks but he had enough in his own nest egg to live on for decades.
Politicians today are not the "gentleman farmers" of yesteryear- they usually get nice compensation for showing up to a board meeting once a year.

I guess I get to get first to point out that people in the MSM have zero credibility when discussing campaign finance reform. Mr. Schieffer's proposals would give more power to the MSM (and unions and organized liberal NGO's) while taking power from everyone else.

I doubt that Mr. Schieffer would want the government to regulate how much money that the networks spend to cover campaigns or who can cover them or how much they can be covered.

As long as the federal government has a budget in the trillions, elections will be expensive and everyone will try to influence them. If you want less spent on elections, then the government will have to spend less.
