Why did the US support NATO membership for Georgia?

bush set this entire situation up with the retoric that has been used by all the bushies over the last several months. Rice claims that she told the Ga. pres-in private not to poke the Russian Bear, and she claims she said this very plainly(while I am not exactly sure what any bushie means by “plain speaking”, I am sure that the prez of Ga. came away from that meeting with a different view of what was said and promised) but then she got up in public-intro by a very happy/pleased prez, whome she had supposedly just told to keep his hands to himself-and said that we will stand behind whatever Georgia wants to do 100%. I have to wonder, exactly what was said, but more importantly, what was heard. The Georgians thought that Rice told them go ahead, pokr the Bear, we got your back.

Russia has degenerated and sadly, has the wrong idea about its past humiliation of the past several years (explaining the aggression in Georgia, a leading New York Times story today).

We can't blame the “Euro-trash” (all too real, but only nominal in this instance) for our (the US's) own impotence. Not that we should nuke Russia or slaughter all of their soldiers in Georgia, but, well, now others who say the US should “do something” have to reconsider their anti-war (anti-USA) mentality if not admit hypocrisy.

I remain confused as to what it is the blog sphere is asking the US or Nato or the EU to do in this regards.

As the op posts:

We begged, cajoled, and arm twisted our European allies to that end in Bucharest this past April, ultimately settling for a vague pledge that Georgia will be put on the path to membership soon.

Then after this somehow suggests that the US did not try very hard to get the Georgians into Nato. Sounds more like a Nato and EU who understands the reality and this I believe was a slap in the faces by Russia that essentially said, Not in my backyard.
