An aside about cussing…Isn't cussing about taking the lords name in vain?
Isn't that what the bible says ..”Thou shalt not take the lords name in vain?”
If so, then what is taking the lords name in vain?
To me, it's using gods name for no good reason or for unethical or immoral reasons.
Some good examples might be:
Those on the air preachers telling people that GOD supports the preachers politics and thus the audience should too …
or GOD wants you to send this preacher money…..
or (my favorite) GOD wants us to HATE who the preacher tells us to hate.
If THAT's not using the lords name in vain, I don't know what is.
And personally, when I say god dammit….I mean it.
Something bad has happened like, stubbing my toe on the refrigerator and I REALLY want god to damn that refrigerator! Or the moments when I'm saying, “OH GOD!” I usually mean it then too (like when someone says something annoying and I'm just too through with what they're saying and I mutter, “OH GOD!”) I really am thinking, “Oh god puh lease shut them up!” THAT is not using the lords name in vain, is it? I said it and meant it and I'm asking god to enforce it .. That's real god and me stuff, no?
So …if it's about using the lords name in vain, perhaps those of us that use it in a manner usually considered cussing are not cussing at all and maybe those preachers always yelling about what god wants, are indeed, using gods name in vain thus CUSSING, eh?
