Of course. Suppress any bad news about a Dem in this important election until it cannot be hidden any longer.

I mentioned the fact that McCain dumped his first wife to illustrate that there is, I think, very little hay for the Republicans to make out of this.

Hypocrisy is bipartisan.

Edwards words below, and his conduct, rank him a hypocrite.

I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen. “

But the press has never refused to speak or even hint of that story . . . nor, per the LA Times . . . sent out an order forbidding even bloggers from making any reference to it whatsoever.

This embargo is almost unprecedented. The only case I can remember like it in recent years is the Eason Jordan case – but there the MSM were protecting one of their own.

For them to shelter a senior American politician like this — when even a rumor of McCain having an affair merited front page NYT coverage — is a major story.

The affair, I believe, is not. It is just sad.

As far as Edwards is concerned, his wife was a public figure supporting his campaign and doing the talking for him. She should have been focusing on her own well being, but chose to support her husband instead. Edwards supposedly started the affair shortly before she was diagnosed (??), and now he is denying that the baby there are photos of him holding is actually his. I won't say at this time everything I think of this man right now, other than candy-assed coward.

I had a feeling things weren't going well for Elizabeth because of the quiet around her. The one positive thing about this news story unraveling around Edwards, is that his wife will be the recipient of many prayers and heartfelt thoughts. Mine, included.

To their credit, the folks at Daily Kos are not defending him for what he has done.

I hope the rest of the left (or most of it) will follow suit.

I agree with Pacatrue, there are many stories that are ignored by the MSM on both sides. They get accused of being liberal for not covering this story but then they can be accused for not covering the forged documents story too. This one happened to be true, I don't know if the forged documents one is but it should be investigated.

The forged documents story, if true, is relevant, just because Bush is almost out of office doesn't make something like forging documents to start a war less serious issue. Especially since we still have troops in the country.

The agenda of the source may be important.
The Enquirer, after all, has not only targeted Edwards, but also broke the story of Limbaugh's prescription drug “problem.”

Thus, the Enquirer in unbiased, in that it will target Democrats and Republicans. (Not that all its stories are true, of course . . . but it has no political bias or agenda).

Suskind may be perceived to have an anti-Bush agenda.

Equally, Bush is also yesterday's news really. What is the interest in pursuing all of these stories about him? He will be gone from the political arena for good in a few months.

Edwards was still a potential player in the Democratic party, a potential VP, and a potential cabinet official.

Perhaps the most annoying fallout out of all of this is that I'm going to have to start talking the National Enquirer a little more seriously (choke). This is the second time in a year they've broken a major story. The next time they have a major bombshell I'm not going to be able to dismiss it so lightly in my mind.

In no way am I defending Edwards… what he did was an evil, cowardly response to his wife's illness (which likely had a profound effect on their marriage). Sadly, what Edwards did is more common than most people realize.

Is the Enquirer a more reliable source than Ron Suskind? Should it not be about the source, but about the evidence the source provides?

I agree. If there is any good to this, it means Edwards will not be at the convention, and this will not be impacting the presidential contest.

He is probably off the list for the Cabinet as well. Who knows, though? Lots of progressives backed him.

The focus of this story should be on the MSM . . . not on Edwards and his family IMHO.

I honestly feel sorry for her.
