Busybodies Reporting The Obvious

This past week we’ve had a couple of ‘news stories’ emerge from the ‘public interest group’ The Center For Science In The Public Interest. For those who might not be familiar with this group, the CSPI has been around since the early 1980’s and is basically against anything that tastes good. If you eat grass and drink water then you might be ok with them but otherwise your diet is considered to be terrible and they want to force you to eat differently.

Over the last few days they have stunned us with the news that fast food (in this case kids meals) is bad for you and that the Thin Mint Blizzard at Dairy Queen is a dietary wasteland.

Well no kidding !!!

I hate to break it to these people but we KNOW the food at these places is bad for us (is there anyone over the age of 10 who does not ?) We also know that it tastes good and that is why we enjoy eating it. I know that I need to eat better, exercise more and lose about 20-30 lbs and I am working on it. But if I periodically go out and eat something bad, so be it. If this means I end up living a few months less then I am willing to make that trade.

I have no problem with a group that tells me when things are good or bad for me, but when they adopt the superior attitude and seek to force me to eat the way they want to then it tends to annoy me.

In fact, I think this weekend I need to go get a nice big Blizzard…… so I guess I do have to thank the CSPI for something.

There must be a shitload of people above the age of 10 who DON'T KNOW.

Approximately 30% of the population is obese and another 20% is overweight.

  • The fact they are obese doesn't mean they don't know its bad for them, simply that they either don't care or are too lazy to exercise.

But everyone knows fast food is bad for you.

It's not just obesity. Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension...there's a long list of health problems associated with being seriously overweight.

These health problems have economic consequences.

Just because you don't care--does that mean nobody should care?

I'm with ya, Patrick. My diet isn't really that horrible, either, with the exception of the holidays when fudge and cookie making isn't just a tradition, it's a sacred ritual. I don't really overeat, I just need to exercise more which I'm also working on.

It's not so much fast food, as the way it is marketed. You can actually now get salads and lighter fare at most of the same places, but they want you to buy the juicy, yummy crap that is their trademark. I, too, need to buy their juicy, yummy, gooey crap from time to time.
